2016-2017 NHL Thread

Pretty cool, I hope the NHL follows suit eventually. A team like the Leafs or Habs could never completely re-design their uniforms in this day and age. A change like this would allow them to still hold onto those timeless designs while still having a new look as well during the season.

I suppose it depends on what you mean by a complete re-design but I absolutely think that the Leafs could have, at some point, gone with a radically different concept for their jerseys. Not a shift in colours probably and the team name doesn't lend itself to anything obvious but something that at least had a retro feel to it.

Something along the line of the dark green ones the Wild wear with the script lettering, for instance.

Time to move them to Kansas City....

If you read the whole report, it suggests the deal would keep them in Raleigh.

2nd worst drop in attendance (or would that be 2nd best drop as it is a huge drop) I would suggest makes them a prime candidate to relocate Mid West.

According to the financial news website 24/7 Wall St., the Carolina Hurricanes have suffered the second largest attendance drop in major league sports over the past 10 years.

The outlet reviewed the 10-year average home attendance of franchises in the MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL to see which teams were losing the most fans.

They've also been a pretty garbage team for 10 years, so I'd think that's a big contributor.

I wasn't paying much attention to hockey when all this went down, so this is a great refresher for those in the same boat.

I saw Dominic Moore playing ping pong with Melanie Ng on Breakfast Television this morning.  Does that count as Leafs summer news?

Ah yeah, it counts.  Anything with a Leaf in it.  :)

Random question, but are there any players/RFA's who produced like Brown did last year who are still unsigned and not involved in arbitration proceedings?

Athanasiou, Anderson, and Bennett are all in his ball park there.

Man, Detroit is such a mess.

And it's pretty impressive Washington and Nashville are that low on the chart considering their success/talent pool.

How much of it was Babcock having too much say?

7 of their 10 contracts with NTC's were signed in the post-Babcock era, so not sure he had that much of a role in that.

I guess he may have propped up some of those players (like Helm and Abdelkader) in the organizations eyes, but that still largely falls on Holland.

Indeed and if reports are to be believed it is Holland who insists on "overcooking" prospects too, Babcock lobbied for a youthful infusion and was shutdown regularly by Holland.

Babcock has said this almost verbatim since he was appointed Leafs coach.

Well I think the other issue is the Wings never really had any youthful players to even insert into their line-ups. Holland's record of drafting and developing players, particularly top-6 forwards or top-4 defencemen, is pretty awful.

Looks like Markov is headed to KHL.

You know, I kept waiting for Markov's play to drop the past few years but it really never did. Even this past season he played very well for a 38-year old. This is a pretty big loss for the Habs. Not sure why they let him go, especially since he (eventually) seemed open to a 1-year contract. They have $8.5mil in cap space, what else could they possibly use that on?

Wonder if they were banking on him staying when they made the Drouin trade.

That's the question of the day. There's definitely no one player on the free agent market worth near that - in fact, the remaining UFAs are largely rank-and-file types or guys at/near the end of their careers. I imagine they're banking on a trade, but their prospect pool isn't exactly flush with the types that teams will be looking for if they're going to be a bigger piece.
