2016 Rio Olympic Summer Games August 5th to 21st

The establishment here probably doesn't care but I'm certainly rooting for Penny Oleksiak as she swims for a shot at a 4th medal tonight.  If she finishes in the top 3 in the it would be the most medals by any Canadian athlete in a single Olympics.  It would also have her in a tie for 8th best career medal mark.  She conceivably could compete in another 3 Olympics after this and really shouldn't be hitting her prime for another 4-5 years.

I care LK, that was amazing. What a performance, I thought she was too far back at the turn to even make the podium. My bad.

What an athlete...at only 16!

Quite the achievement...

A 24 year gold draught for Canada is over. So proud to pass the baton to @OleksiakPenny. Incredible. 7th at 50m and ties for the win. Wow

...What a way to go, Penny!

Prior to the games, I was pretty keen to see Yusdra Mardini do well because of her amazing story and resilience, but dang, Penny just hit national hero level by completing her medal collection at the age of 16.

I remember what I was doing at 16 and now I regret my life choices.

I thank Elliotte Friedman for allowing me to live, however briefly, in a world in which Michael Phelps didn't win a race.

Poor guy.  But he's completely owned up to his gaffe, and the support for him has thankfully been huge.

She's just has the perfect genetic makeup for this kind of thing (besides aptitude and hard work). I mean I always wanted to be a Baseball player but I just don't have the build for it - she's a 6'1", thin swimmer at 16 who comes from hardcore athletic parents. Her brother plays on Dallas. It's almost like she was born to swim.

Also a crazy fact, she's from the neighbourhood I live in - I wonder if she ever swam at the Donald D. Somerville pool. Cool to have an Olympian in the community!

He was in a tough spot too that I don't think many (especially those who have gotten wind of this int he US) really understand. Having to fill in for such a high-profile event that he isn't really familiar with on relatively short notice.

Yeah, he is one of the few that I would/do genuinely feel bad far, such a class act.

Friedman is such a good guy and broadcasting talent that you feel absolutely horrible for him.  I'd be completely rattled right now I'd lock myself in the hotel and not want to continue the rest of the Olympics.

But man, separating the good guy stuff aside for a second and seeing this again 12+ hours after the fact, I can't help but wonder how he could royally screw that up?  Even if he thought it was Lochte, he'd quickly realize Lochte has never beaten Phelps before let alone would be blowing him away like that.  And if there is one lane to concentrate on and know while ignoring the rest, it's Phelps's.

Imagine the 2010 Gold medal game Cuthbert called the winning goal as follows: "Dany Heatley!  Dany Heatley scores the Golden Goal!  Oh wait...that was Sidney Crosby.  My apologies."

Friedman also bungled the call on Oleksiak's swim right after, calling her Overholt as she was driving for the finish. CBC has since edited it so if you didn't see it live you wouldn't have known.

I too like Friedman and feel bad for him, it's just really unfortunate that two historic calls were off.

Here's a good interview with Friedman about the gaffe.  Great attitude and approach.  I wish more public figures faced their mistakes as head-on and honestly as Friedman does:

Great read thanks for the link. Friedman is a true pro and a class act.

Maybe I'm missing something but this seems like an absurd amount of hand-wringing over confusing two swimmers.

Canada booked a  showdown with Germany for the Semi-Final, set for next Tuesday, in defeating France by a score of 1-0 in Women's Olympic Soccer.

Canada had beaten a stunned German team earlier in earlier Olympic Soccer action.

Canada's Janine Beckie leads the team in  goals (3) and assists (1) and is second overall in the tournament.

I think it's mostly about the fact that one of them was Michael Phelps and it was a relatively historic race.

I wish I could find video of the time Brian Williams was calling a Blue Jays game and he casually mis-called a home run the third out of the inning.  That was funny.

Canada's Rosie MacLennan won Gold in the Women's Trampoline of the Gymnastics portion.  This is MacLellan's second Gold in this event at an Olympics,  as she also won it at the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games.

There's no Hope for Solo except the word loser, a word she can't seem to accept, calling Team Sweden's play "cowardly".  Huh??

Team USA ousted from Women's Olympic Soccer action in losing to Team Sweden in  shootout.  Aww.  Sore loser Americans.
