2017-18 Toronto Maple Leafs - General Discussion

I'm flattered, but tv is a whole different gig than writing. I edit my writing. Really hard to edit what comes out of my mouth when it's rolling! Aside from some usual gaffes and standard talking points, Millen and Romanuk mentioned some interesting things last night that I'd give them props for: when Kadri had a clean break, Millen pointed out how the Leafs' bench called out Three! Three! to let him know he had support; he also noted how the younger Leafs didn't talk much on the ice. I'm pretty convinced a lot of Gardiner's troubles with Zaitsev (and everyone's chemistry issues with Zaitsev) is that he doesn't get much communication from him. Contrast that with Carrick (and how much Hainsey barks at everyone) and you see cleaner breakouts and retrievals.

I wrote it all myself, but Carlton's not entirely wrong in that a lot of the observations I've made were refined by the writings (and podcast appearances) of others, which might be difficult for me to cite exactly. The big three (point five) writers of influence for Leafs systems analysis for me are probably Justin Bourne, Anthony Petrielli, Gus Katsaros, and when he was publicly available, Jack Han. They're still my observations (if you want to timestamp check the GDTs and other threads  :P ) but their writings have helped me with the terminology and helpful things to watch for. I haven't played the game at any organized level, and I have zero direct access to the team, so I've definitely got some assumptions in there that could be wrong.

one of my favourite quotes. :-X

I was really hoping someone would highlight last night's Nylander forecheck where he stripped a couple of defenders with basically zero contact.

He's a physics genius.

What the hell are you doing hanging around here, herman?  Your stuff is 11000x better than Colby Freaking Armstrong and a bunch of other talking heads on the broadcasts.  For God's sake, some forward-looking producer should show Millen the gate, turn off Romanuk's mic, shove a tablet in your hands, and let you telestrate the damn games.

I agree, herman, that you're extremely knowledgeable and you're fun to chat with on the forum here also.

I will say that the talking heads on TV have a script.  So you wouldn't be going into that blind.  I do think you would fit in nicely in the sports media in some capacity, if you are not doing so already.  I also don't know how much you enjoy your current day job. :)

Haha thanks.

Well, judging by my posting history and timestamps, a good chunk of my day job is spent here, so I'm a pretty terrible employee.

Ahh, blackmail ops, served up on a silver platter .... now I'll be able to get that pickup truck I've had my eye on.  *rubs hands gleefully*

What the thinking on Borgman at this point, is he an upgrade over Polak.  I thought he played pretty steady up until his last few games, does he have a future with us.
He seemed to have a nice physical nature to his game.

So it kind of looks like Matthews hurt his back, which would be bad news given his injury history.

Hoping it's something unrelated, like his shoulder.

Pfffft, he's probably just copying and pasting all this stuff from the Athletic because he knows nobody else reads it.

Your link is busted.

Also, an update on those magic numbers

Buffalo - 8
Ottawa - 15
Montreal - 17
Detroit - 21
Florida - 27  (Locks the Leafs in as a 3rd seed)
Carolina - 27 (Currently has the best potential record opportunity for the 2nd wildcard)

Love the tsn video headline this morning: "Is Babcock's non-update on Matthews a cause for concern?"

What do they take us fans for?  A bunch of losers whose entire world hinges on whether one guy might have a bruised shoulder?  I mean ?

? WHEN ARE WE GOING TO HEAR SOMETHING

If Martin still can't get into the line-up that's amazing.
I was looking at it differently...thinking if Leivo can't get in the lineup with Matthews out, he never will. Looks like Leivo will get his chance.

Let's hope so..I'd like to see Kaps with Nylander tho.

Nylander-Hyman-Brown was a fantastic line in the AHL two years ago.  They may have some chemistry from working together in the past so I'm fine with starting with that trio.  If they don't rekindle it, I'm sure we'll see Kapanen and Brown swap places.
