2017-2018 NHL Thread

https://www.rawcharge.com/2018/3/4/17075552/raw-charges-russian-translator-has-strong-words-about-the-khl-and-the-olympics

Written and posted a few days before Slava's thread.

The scheme is exactly what the Russian Ice Hockey Federation had planned: SKA is officially regarded as the ?base club of the national team?. This phrase has been said so many times it makes me flinch. I know I am not alone in the sentiment.

Dundon is rather interesting.

?I don?t know other owners, I?m assuming they have sign-off. But that?s how I look at this. Green and red you can prove, yellow is the things that are debatable. I have no interest in yellow. We have to create the structure so that we know the difference?I want to make as few decisions as possible, because we?ve created a structure that is clearer for everyone.?

?Common sense and judgement usually win. Ego loses.?

Sounds like Ron Francis has effectively been fired in Carolina.

They better stay the hell away from Dubas/Keefe.

Speculation seemed to be that Dundon would be looking for what amounted to a figurehead GM and would be making a lot of personnel decisions himself. It's hard to imagine that's a job that would interest Dubas.

Per the usual suspects Dubas has turned down all overtures since the Colorado/new contract situation last summer, he's the heir apparent in Toronto and appears to have had some guarantees about next year and isn't even interested in interviewing elsewhere now.

I'd like to read what you're reading, please.

Me too...where did you hear he's not interested in interviewing elsewhere?

It really sounds like Dundon wants a computer to be the GM.

So...it will be Dubas?

A lot of what he's asking for is technically what Shanahan/Dubas have put together...

He wants an infrastructure and institution of operations that isn't locked up in specific people (e.g. Francis was sort of doing everything), but keyed to business and decision-making processes where they are guide by as much data and experience he can plug in.

A Rube-Goldberg machine of hockey operations, it would seem.

LeBrun: What are you looking for in the next GM if you were going to articulate some general attributes?

Dundon: [...] I want to make sure we have a good structure in place, a good process in place as to how we come to decisions. And leverage Ron, and Don Waddell, and the scouts and the coaches, help somebody collaborate to make the right decisions for the organization. Maybe that?s too generic, but that?s probably one. And two is, the day-to-day focus on relationships with other teams and agents and really challenging everything we do and really focusing on the player side.

[...]

LeBrun: People have speculated that you?re very hands-on, and I guess I would say, well, you?re the owner and you can do what you want. But how would you characterize your day-to-day involvement with the team so far and moving forward? In other words, what would the new GM have to expect that way from Tom Dundon?

Dundon: [...] I would say this is very important to me to be successful, and I?m going to do the best that I can to give everybody all the resources. I also don?t have any desire to make the decisions, if that makes sense. If I have to make the decisions, then we?re doing it wrong. But if the decisions are made because the organization has robust processes and debate, nobody?s insecure about whether or not they like each other or whether or not they?re going to be judged for their decision, but they?re just getting together to get the right outcome, I feel pretty good that the organization will be functioning properly. I don?t really define it as hands-on or not. But for a while, I?m definitely going to be hands-on (says with a chuckle).

Lol. Come to the Athletic for all of your hard hitting journalism needs.

One of the really nice things that has come out of the 31 Thoughts Podcast (Friedman and Marek) is the rise to prominence of Marc Savard's stick taping obsessiveness.

As a result of that conversation, Savard has started up a YouTube channel show people how he did his sticks, and now how players around the league do theirs.

Here's the one he did for Marner and Nylander's.
Here's the original video.

Edit: as expected, there are a lot of instances where I could use this gif.

I like the way he pays extra attention to the knob. I think a lot of people overlook this.

I'd like to read what you're reading, please.

It was on a puck talks live event I had a periscope stream of a few weeks ago.

Bourne was in attendance and he said the Colorado offer was real and the reasons Dubas didn't take it were real too. He and Dubas are close friends, a lot of what was said was said with a grin and a wink, saying without saying basically.

Chris Johnston also alluded to much the same thing that night when he was asked about who he thought would be the Leafs GM next season.

I've since heard a bunch of people on various Leafs related podcasts/broadcasts mention that it's common knowledge that Dubas isn't interested in being considered for management positions on other teams.

Chris Johnston mentioned something along these lines on headlines recently too about certain assurances being made within the Leafs management group.

I can't find it for you in writing, but based on everything I've read, heard and put together I'm pretty sure it's a foregone conclusion at this point.

Also, if you get a chance to go to one of those Puck Talks events, give it a bash. The journalists have a few pops and let their hair down a bit and reveal a little bit more than we tend to see elsewhere.

Thanks, WIGWAL. Looks like there is one coming up at the end of the month.
