2017-2018 NHL Thread

Gonna be a shame when he signs a huge contract and his shooting percentage drops to a much more maintainable level than his current 23.3%. Coming into the season, his career Sh% was 7.7%.

I'm looking forward to this. Marchesault and Smith generate a good amount of opportunity for him to capitalize on if he's still on their line, so I can see him settling around 10%ish.

Not that it's not water under the bridge already, but which Travis do we want now?

At the time the decision was made, based on our circumstances, I thought our multiple trade downs made sense. Now... I still think it was the right call.

That's probably about right, which would put him in the 20 goal range at his current shooting rate.

That reminded me of this tweet that I saw earlier today too:

He was struggling to score earlier in the season but he's had a fantastic second half. Obviously considering our strengths and weaknesses I think we're all pretty fine with Dermott but Konecny's going to be a heck of a player too.

He is pretty fantastic, though riding a bit of a SH% bump himself. A small part of two straight years of crazy high-end drafts that'll probably dominate the league for the next chunk of the decade.

If Bracco makes it too, that's icing on the cake for us; he's been quite solid defensively with the Marlies, to my surprise. I don't know about Dzierkals, but I really liked the gumption to go for quantity at the ground floor of the deliberate rebuild. Even crazier is if Marner was picked by Arizona (haha), we would've traded the 4th down to take a crack at Provarov or Werenski +.

Now that's an interesting question. Would you take Werenski+Konency or Marner+Dermott? If Werenski was a righty I'd probably lean toward the alt-universe version of how the draft played out. Of course he isn't though so I'd stick with our guys.

I asked a similar question before, and I think most people liked the idea of having Marner.  It'll depend on how their careers shake out, but if things keep going the way they are going, I think people will be pretty happy with Marner + Dermott when all is said and done.

For sure. I don't really think that there's a wrong answer there.

So long Henrik and Denrik. When I think back on the last 17 NHL seasons I can't deny that you certainly played in them.

Also, let us celebrate their careers by letting me, one last time, point out how just drop-dead ridiculous and narrative driven NHL awards are which cannot be better summed up than by Henrik Sedin winning the Hart over Sid Crosby and Alex Ovechkin in 09-10.

This isn't really a Sedins criticism in any way, but the whole "this is the classiest player to ever play the game, there'll never be anyone classier" is said about someone at least once a season.

edit: I can't wait for some Boston guy to say this about Marchand when he retires.

"Class", in this context, is such a meaningless word. More over, in this context, it's pretty hard to disconnect it from the racialized junk criticism that Subban faced for daring to have a personality and style of his own.

Also, I understand that the Athletic-Sniffers and their ilk have given up on any critical reporting of the league ever but don't just drop this without giving us the other side of the story. The Sedin's are the classiest ever? Ok, then let us know in what ways Steve Yzerman was a jerk.

I for one would like to congratulate the Sedin's for essentially giving up on trying to win a Stanley Cup in the last quarter of their careers because they didn't want to deal with a moving company.

Well, double the class.  2 Sedwins, 1 Yzerman.

I mean, Yzerman on his own could outclass either one, hands down. But both combined?  Not a chance.

I'm no Sedin fan but he did win the Art Ross that year and a lot of times that winner also gets the Hart. He had a crazy 83 assists

He had 3 more points than Crosby who scored 22 goals more than Sedin.

Meanwhile Sedin was playing with his brother while Crosby was playing with the ugliest collection of wingers ever assembled(Pittsburgh's highest scoring winger was 38 year old Bill Guerin who had 45 points). In addition Sedin was below 50% on faceoffs while Crosby was one of the better faceoff men in the league.

Ovechkin, on the other hand, tied with Crosby for points, scored 50 goals, while playing 10 fewer games than Sedin.

Nobody alive would have taken Sedin over either of those two that year.

Alright screw the Sedins and the Brian Burke they rode in on.

Looking at that 1999 draft, the Sedins were really 2 and 3 out of that draft, other than the aberration Zetterberg in the 14th round.

Bruising crowd here.  Still, gotta agree that they never seemed to be able to drive a winning bus.
