4. Why am I OK with Chiarelli?s return? Mostly it?s because I saw all kinds of coaching issues with the team last year. Chiarelli assembled a roster that almost every Oilers fans and NHL observer thought was going to make the playoffs this year, if not win the Stanley Cup. That was the near unanimous assessment. That the Oilers failed to do so is partly related to everyone, including Chiarelli over-estimating the strength of the group, but there was no end of coaching issues related to power play and penalty kill performance, the team?s poor start in games, player personnel decisions such as the under-use of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins with Connor McDavid and the over-use of Leon Draisailt with McDavid, and with the over-use of struggling vets such as Mark Letestu, Milan Lucic and Andrej Sekera, often in key spots on special teams. Hardly any player?s game trended up this year. The young players stayed the same, in general, or took a step back in terms of their performance. The old veterans were kept forever in key roles on the top lines and special team units, even as they failed to get the job done there.
