If they don't get past the first round this season has been an utter fail. I expect next the team to take a step back next season as we'll be losing some players due to cap issues (Gardiner, Hainsey, one of Johnsson or Kappy, and maybe even Brown, Kadri, or Willie via trades).

I don?t understand this mindset at all. You can't look at things in a vacuum but rather in the appropriate context. If they lose to Boston in the 1st round it means they lost to the 3rd best team in the league! Just because it happens to be in the first round due to a flawed playoff system isn?t an indictment on how bad the Leafs are.

To me, a 1st round exit is a disappointment, but not a failure.  It's a process, and I'm perfectly happy to be patient with the core that's in place here.

Someone else already said it - we should expect a regression next year due to cap issues and I'm fine with that too.

There may also be a few unpopular moves over the summer to make it all fit under the cap. Should be an interesting off season, but let's see what happens this year first.

Well said.

I'm not expecting much regression at all. We do get a full year of Muzzin and Dermott has improved quite a bit and should be a decent Gardiner replacement. The loss of either Kapanen or Johnsson might be a bit tougher.

I think both stay unless their asks are unreal. I think we also see Liljegren next season. I also wouldn't be shocked if they resigned Hainsey on the cheap. We will need to expose someone in the expansion draft.
