2018 Draft Targets

Had a chance yesterday to take in the OHL championship game in Hamilton.

Hamilton came into the game up 3-2 against Kyle Dubas' ex-team, The Soo Greyhounds.

Great game, and the Bulldogs are the OHL champs after a well fought 5-4 game.  I have never seen FirstOntario Centre (Copps) so loud and full...they say there were 8600 people there.

From a guy that used to go watch the AHL Bulldogs play there, that's about 5 times the crowd.  Good to see this result and attendance, as Andlauer is lobbying for a new rink.

I get why the AHL can be a tough draw so I think it's a very good thing for Hamilton to emerge as a big deal OHL city on the level of London.

Jonatan Berggren: zone entry machine

I don't know about you guys, but this list isn't filling me with a great deal of confidence moving forward...source: https://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/toronto-maple-leafs-prospects/2018/6/1/17418980/updated-toronto-maple-leafs-prospect-pipeline-draft-rights-expire

If these were our only prospects then it?d be dour. Fortunately it is just a list of players we hold the rights to that we haven?t made decisions on yet. Barring something crazy, I see at least 5-7 likely ELCs, and many of them are looked down on largely due to an absence of public evidence of talent, rather than evidence of an absence of talent.

Agreed and let?s not forget what actually playing as a pro anywhere in the Leafs system gives you access to, development tools that are absolutely cutting edge and allow those with the requisite hunger to smooth out some of their rougher edges.

If you believe Dubas when he talks about implementing a real three tiered pro system akin to Baseball, then expect to see a lot of these players sign AHL deals before signing their ELC?s.

Ideally you?ll give those that need it 3/4 years to develop, it?ll be remarkable the amount of middle and bottom lineup  players they will continue to churn out.

These players can replace guys like Brown and Hyman when they are due for new contracts and you won?t be able to fit them under the cap.

The best part is that every so often you get lucky and turn a middling prospect into a star via continued development.

With that said, I agree with Frank that in general the Leafs system isn't all that exciting right now. That's understandable given how many good young players the Leafs have on the big club but we should be honest about the fact that the fact that the team's 2nd/3rd round picks looking like a pretty mixed bag right now is kind of an issue going forward.

The undecided reserve list really isn?t supposed to be exciting.

Drafted players they?ve ELC?d under Dubas, ignoring the first rounders:
Timashov, Engvall, Lindgren, Bracco, Dermott, Nielsen, Grundstrom, Brooks, Johnsson

Free external adds under 24:
Moore, Marchment, Kaskisuo, Borgman, Rosen, Holl

Yes, I can see where you might get that I was specifically referring to the undecided reserve list from "in general the Leafs' system..."

In an unrelated note, I'm very close to deciding that the undersized defenseman I will be irrationally high on this year is going to be Nicolas Beaudin.

That?s because I was sort of talking around your point :)

I don?t know other prospect systems around the league all that well, so which ones are actually exciting without the parent squad being a total panzer? Nashville, Tampa, St. Louis, and Vegas (sort of)?

I like what they?ve done with Marchment, Holl, and Moore; each has drastically re-made his game from scrap heap refuse to contributing member of a Calder Cup contender. It?s not outright NHL time, but I can see any of these three plugging a bottom line hole right now easily.

I have no idea. Is Panzer good or bad?
