2018 Toronto Blue Jays General Season Thread

JD won't forget us fans, just as many won't forget him...starting anew as a Cleveland Indian will help ease the pain of his Blue Jay departure:

Jays avoid a Rays sweep by routing Tampa Bay 10-3 Wednesday night.

An emotional night for the Jays prosper Rowdy Tellez who hit his first RBI double and dedicating it to his mother who passed away with cancer.

Jays starter Aaron Sanchez was in fine form in getting the win.  He pitched six inning, limited the Rays to three runs, and was generally in command of his pitches.
Tepera & Mayza provided shutout relief while Giles closed out the ninth.

The Cleveland Indians (79-60) (sans Donaldson) hop into town for a four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays (63-76).

The Indians are all but runaway leaders in their A.L. Central division, a whopping 16 GL over the second-place Minnesota Twins for first place.
While Cleveland recently acquired Josh Donaldson from the Jays, don't expect him to be in the lineup as Donaldson is continuing his rehabbing.  (He's actually on the 10-day DL with a strained calf).

Jays fans will get to see another former Jay, Edwin Encarnacion.

Too bad many of the faithful at the Rogers Centre had their sites set on hoping to see Toronto prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr. as a September call-up.  Sorry to disappoint, but Jays President Mark Shapiro made it clear there won't be any Vladdy to cheer for in the lineup.

At least, we can begin to see the Jays in transition with all of the youngsters currently in the lineup.  Still a lot to cheer about, no doubt.

LET'S GO BLUE JAYS!

The Blue Jays managed a split of their series with the Indians yesterday ( Sunday) afternoon, with a 6-2 win over the Indians.  Justin Smoak's two-run homer and Teoscar Hernandez' three-run shot helped the Jays on the scoreboard.

Jays starter Thomas Pannone pitched a little over six innings allowing me two runs but generally had an excellent outing on the mound in earning the win.

Closer Ken "100Miles" Giles earned his 25th save in 25 straight games.

Scary moment for Jays RF Randall Grichuk as he slid smack into a security guard and the chair face first in attempting to catch a fly ball.  Ah well, the security guard went flying and Grichuk suffered facial contusion & abrasions, and scans later proved negative.  Oh yes in case you're wondering, the security guard ended up just fine.  No injuries.

Athens Jays have an off-day today and will resume on the road against the Red Sox Tuesday.

The Blue Jays (66-78) visit Fenway Park in Boston for a three-game tilt against the  Red Sox (98-46).

The Bosox are far and away the best team in baseball -- they own the best w/l record in the Major leagues.  They occupy first in the A.L. East,; 8.0 G ahead of the second-place NYYankees.

The Blue Jays just came off a split of their most recent home series versus the Cleveland Indians.

The Jays Billy McKinney, the youbg prospect who was acquired in the J.A  Happ trade with the Yankees earlier in the season,, has shown to be quite the capable  hitter & left fielder, is batting .348 with having reached base eighteen straight games.

Toronto will be embarking on a nine game road stand.

LET'S GO BLUE JAYS!

The Blue Jays blow the game, make that Yangervis Solarte,  the third baseman who failed to get a glove on an  innocuous pop-up in the eighth inning.  Jays lose 4--3.

With the Jays having tied the game, first on a Lourdes Gurriel Jr. solo homer, then on some timely bad Boston pitching.  After that came Solarte's faux pas in the ninth.

The opposite of Wednesday night's game in which the Jays starter Aaron Sanchez pitched a duel against the Bosox' (and ex-Jay) David Price.

The Jays lost 1-0; but had something to cheer about as Rowdy Tellez set a MLB record not seen since 1913, in hitting seven doubles in seven games.
The other positive was seeing Sanchez being injury-free, as meaning no recurrence of his blistered finger problems.

The Blue Jays ( 66-81) venture to Yankee Stadium to partake in a three-game series against the Bronx Bombers, the NYYankees (90-56).

The Yankees, a solid second in the A.L. East division 10.0 GBL Boston R3d Sox, and 1.5 G ahead of the Oakland A's for the WC spot.

As for the Blue Jays, they got swept three straight against the Bosox in their most recent road series, not much in the way of positives, yet the scores were close in the last two games of that series.

Rowdy Tellez continues to impress having batted .409 and an 1.298 OPS.  This shows that the kids are soing alright but the pitching remains very much a trial & error baptismal fire of sorts for the Jays young arms.  Ah well, nothing quite like a learning curve.

LET'S GO BLUE JAYS!

The Blue Jays beat the Yankees Sunday afternoon 3-2 with starter Thomas Pannone getting the win.

On Saturday it was another of the Jays young pitching prospects, Sean-Reid Foley who had quite the day at Yankee Stadium, in maintaining a 5-0 lead all the way up to the fifth inning...then the fun began...

...with the Jays leading a solid 8-1 in the eighth, who 'da thunk it that they'd blow the lead.  Yep, Yankees came back plus a Gtand Slammer to boot but fell just short of the mark as the Jays hung on for the win.  Whew!

The Toronto Blue Jays visit Oriole Park at Camden Yards for a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Os, well we all know where they sit in the A.L.East, actually in all of baseball.  Gotta feel for them somewhat for being given the diatinction as Major League baseball's worst team this year.

The Blue Jays are flying high after taking two of three in their most recent road series against the Yankees.

Some good stuff came out of these wins, no not the 11-0 debacle of Game 1 in New York, but the ensuing victories.  The young pitching prospects -- Thomas Pannone & Sean-Reid Foley-- shone.
They received offensive support which helped contribute to the overall picture.

What some of the Jays youngsters have shown so far (both pitching and offence) is uplifting.

Hope to see more of it for the rest of the season going into next.

LET'S GO BLUE JAYS!

On Monday night, the Jays won 5-0 as srarter Ryan Borucki pitched eight innings in striking out seven.

Jays offence was powered by a couple of home runs by Danny Jansen (a two-run homer), Diaz and Pillar.

Ouch!  That hurts!

The above can very well be siad about the sad sack lowly Baltimore Orioles, who suffered a team record loss #108 in going down 6-4 to the Blue Jays.

The Jays though needed a comeback to secure the win. Led by Lourdes Gurriel Jr., the Jays pelted gut four runs in the seventh inning to rally from a 4-2 deficit.

Jays starter Aaron Sanchez did not have one of his better starts in allowing two runs in a little over four innings.  Even though he allowed the two runs, vintage Sanchez it sure wasn't.
Petricka got the win and Giles the save.

Giles looks like an adequate replacement for Ousana for the time being. Likeing what I am seeing in some of these young Jays pitchers, not to mention Rowdy and the rest of the hitters. The future looks brighter than in a long time.

Giles has been Mr. Steady as the closer.  Liked what I saw in Tellez, Jansen, Reid-Foley & Pannone so far.

Having these youngsters adds a different dimension to the team already, coupled with some experience from the veterans.  Can't wait to see the rest of the prospects -- Vlady, Bo & co., once they make the roster in earnest.

Developing the prospects into Major League professionals is going to take time, but the process in so doing is going to be interesting to watch next season.
And the season after.

Since Atkins timed 2021 the year when the Jays finally become an erstwhile competitor, between the now and the then, there's going to be plenty of activity in terms of past, present, and future Jays.  The possibilities are exciting if everything goes according to plan.

Ah, natch, Blue Jays get edged 2-1 by the Os (yes, Merle, the Os did win).

The Jays took the series 2-1.

The Tampa Bay Rays (85-66) come to town to play the Blue Jays (69-83) at the Rogers Centre in a four-game series.

The Rays, who sit third in the A.L.East,; still have a chance to sneak into the post-season, 6.5 GB for the WC spot.  The regular season is nearing it's end soon, so the clock is ticking for Tampa Bay as the pressure mounts as every game becomes closer to a must-win.

The Blue Jays wo are riding a four-game winning streak, are currently coming off having taken two out of three from the Orioles in their most recent road series.

For the Jays, this series marks the first of their last seven game homestand of the year.

Of course, as Toronto has long been out of a playoff spot, -it would be something if the Jays coild make this a miserable series for the Rays.  With all the youngsters in the lineup and playing before the the faithful, how can they go wrong?

Should be interesting.

Bombs away!

[tweet]1042970482998308864[/tweet]

This was one of the greatest, if not the greatest ninth-inning rallies ever displayed by a Blue Jay club.  And how!

The Jays came from behind an 8-2 deficit to win it 9-8 Thursday against the WC-seeking Rays.

First it was Rowdy Tellez who solo homered early in the game.  Then in the ninth came  Danny Jansen's three-run blast that brought the score closer.  Some other offensive contributions, plus Lourdes Gurriel Jr.'s two run shot that tied it up.  Fonally, the ever dependable Justin Smoak blasted a walk-off home run to win it.

Wow.  Proves the kids (who kickstarted the comeback) are indeed alright.

On the pitching front, Jays starter Sam Gaviglio was less than stellar and the same could be said of the Jays relievers, none of whom could stem the tide of Tampa runs on the scoreboard.

Winner was David Paulino, the Jays reliever who earnwd his first-ever Major League win.

Pretty epic comeback indeed. If no one was there to see it, did it really happen?

Whoosh!

With wind gusts hovering above the Rogers Centre (considering the weather), the Blue Jays got windswept on this night.  On the scoreboard that is, in an 11-3 whitewash at the hands of the Rays.

Jays starter Sean-Reid Foley, who  simply got into control issues again and had poor command of his pitches, as Tampa Bay made short work of him in banging in four runs off him in the four innings in which he pitched.

Well, the game itself was tied at one point  on before Toronto imploded on the mound and Tampa Bay's offence exploded at the plate.

Good job on the part of Gurriel & Gritchuk -- Lourdes Jr.  hit two home runs and Gritchuk's solo (which had tied it up).
