2019-2020 NHL Thread

While in the main I?m on board with the extremely fast and skilful NHL. And I?m glad that we don?t have guys fighting off face offs cos our star guy got hit by one of their not star guys 3 months ago.

I?m all for some of this tension between teams.

And I?m even more in favour of more goalie fights

A long-awaited Byfuglien update: on Saturday Friedman said it was unlikely he would play again this season and that a decision on next season wouldn't come until the summer.

Today Seravalli is reporting that a mutual contract termination is in the works:

I think in general most people agree with that. When violence springs out of genuine animosity between teams like, say, Detroit and Colorado then it's reasonably understandable as it's the sort of thing that happens in all sports and there's not much you can do to prevent it.

The problem for the NHL there though is that the Bertuzzi-Moore thing firmly established that the league can't trust players to decide for themselves what is an appropriate level of animosity in games like this. Not for any prudish "what's best for the game" sort of thing but from a very real legal liability standpoint.

Because, you know, all of these things tend to start with dirty or borderline hits. Lemieux on Draper, Moore on Naslund, Tkachuk on Kassian, etc.

If Friedman is wrong about Buff not playing this season, and he can be picked up for free as a UFA? Yes please.

He still hasn't resumed skating so I can't imagine his health/fitness/conditioning levels will be at a point where he's comfortable playing this season.

Next season though...

I'd be really wary of that big body coming off ankle surgery but if he agreed to a cheap 1 year deal you could get a steal.

You need a big strong RHD who can block shots and take the body and clear the net.

I think it's maybe swung a little too far towards completely sanitised and clean, for the understandable reasons you say.

Maybe that's partly down as well to the parity within the league - there's so little between teams that every point matters when it comes to qualifying for playoffs etc they can't afford to be having players suspended etc. I dunno.

Josh Morrissey was always the comparable that most people seemed to be bringing up when talking about Nurse's next contract and he got $6.25mil but for 8 years.

Is Nurse's deal worth talking about in comparison to what Muzzin should be looking at?

RFA vs. UFA.
25 year old vs. 30 year old.
Short-term bridge vs. probably long-term deal.

I'm with you there, but Nurse is 25.  It's not like he doesn't have a resume.  He has more upside than Muzzin, right?

Like Muzzin's deal should probably be looked at as diminishing returns as it gets older?

Jeff Skinner, 19 points in 46 games and has 7 more years at 9M with a full NMC.

I defended him when he signed the contract as someone who has at least been one of the leagues elite goal scorers the past few years. I don't know what the heck is going on here.

Not really out of character for him to follow up a big season with a disappointing one. He's done it before.
