No, but they might. With the 3 OT losses that would have been pure Ls in 85-86, they're at 52 - and, if you take away shootout wins (as they didn't have the potential back then), they might win fewer that the 17 they won that season.

In a normal season the "reward" for teams being good and well run is getting to compete for the cup. The consolation prize for being bad is better draft position.
But if you are forced to cancel the reward for the good teams, it strikes me as crazy to maintain the reward for the bad teams. Then the only teams to really benefit from the season are the bottom feeders.
