2019-2020 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

A 3-0 final so that puts us up 5 points with an equal number of games remaining. We also have a slightly easier remaining schedule than Florida's, although we do have some very tough games coming up after we get home from the California tour.

It's not a huge cushion but it's still a decent one with this many games left. They also dumped one of their better players for a couple depth pieces which makes them worse.

Meaningless day in the schedule today.  The Leafs don't play until 10:30 EST tomorrow night.  Man I hate these west coast trips.

Florida's on pace for just 90 points. Leafs are on pace for 96. But to reach 98 points we'd just need 20 points over 16 games, so something like 9-5-2 would get us there. Toronto's 9-6-1 in their past 16 games and that included a stretch where they didn't win consecutive games for almost a month so I think that's pretty attainable even with our injuries.

For Florida to reach 98 points they'd need 25 points over 16 games. That's much tougher. 11-2-3 or something. They're 5-9-2 in their past 16 games.

So the Leafs just need to focus on winning basically every other game, with a random 2-game winning streak somewhere in there. Florida needs to pick up points in almost every game they play.

At this point in the season, 5 points is a pretty significant gap, as CtB points out. At this point, the Leafs are fully in charge of their own destiny.

Spezza can have any job in the organization that he wants post-retirement.

Spezza will be back if he wants to play again. His leadership has been noted over and over again this season and he' putting up pretty good numbers/60mins.

I'd love to have him join Robidas in the skill development coaching side of things. I could actually see him being a NHL head coach some day waaaaaaaaay in the future. He thinks and talks the game really well.

I'm less convinced that he's someone we should be in a hurry to bring back. He's chipped in offensively a bit but he's also something of a disaster defensively. It would depend a lot on who else is on that 4th line next year. If they can make up for his D liability then sure, but I'd rather give that spot to someone on their way up (Nick Roberston?) or someone more like Engvall who is safe and can act as a PK specialist.

For sure. I think he'd be great in that role if he wanted to stay in hockey after his playing days are done.

I'd be very comfortable with him as a 4RW guy. If it's something like Clifford-Engvall-Spezza then we have a mucker, PK specialist, and PP specialist. But yeah expectations should be tempered. It's not unreasonable to expect some drop-off next season given his age.

Not shocking given his defensive struggles.

At this stage in their careers Rosen and Sandin seem like pretty interchangeable players. Obviously the future is much brighter for Sandin, but I don't think it's a big deal to swap them in and out right now.
