This has been debated a bit already but it's entirely possible Gardiner came into July 1st thinking he was the best defenceman available and that he'd get $7mil x 7 years and that other teams still see him as a defenceman who makes a lot of mistakes in the defensive zone and doesn't actually put up a ton of points (at least not for a $7mil defenceman).

Reading this back, I wanted to clarify that I'm not knocking Gardiner here (anyone who has even kinda followed my posts in the past knows I think very highly of him). But he's also a very tough player to find a market value for. We still haven't really seen players whose biggest trait is puck possession cash in for big dollars on a contract I don't think. And Gardiner's lack of big offensive numbers also doesn't help him a ton. I will say whoever does end up signing him will probably end up with a pretty good contract for their team.

Didin't take it that way. If the Leafs could sign him at 5 mill, I'd be all for it. 6-7, way too much for what he brings.

If that lumbering oaf Myers got $6 million (sorry, I have an irrational dislike for Myers), I don't think it is too far-fetched for Gardiner to look for something between $6-7 million.  The 7 years is a couple years too long though, most definitely.

It's not far fetched for him to want that but the fact that he hasn't signed something like that yet says to me that there's a pretty good chance that nobody wants to give it to him.

You and I might (correctly) believe that Gardiner is the superior player because we're super smart. But GMs around the league? Not so much.

Do we think Ceci was despised by Sens fans because he's absolutely terrible, or do you think, as has been pointed out, that he was expected to do too much being one of the only recognizable names left on that hockey team.

Regardless of whatever expectations were put on him, he was absolutely terrible and even this year, with Duchene and Stone and so on, he wasn't enough of a standout to be a singular focus for fans' ire.

Like I asked in the other thread, who the hell is Thomas Williams? We'll see. Leafs don't start tomorrow.

Why does who he is matter more than the points he's making? Literally the entirety of off-season hockey talk is evaluating guys who get signed and whether or not they're worth the money they just signed for.

Looking at those highlights, he looks an awful lot like Zaitsev in the defensive end.

I'm not saying the attacks aren't worth it. To be honest, I did my best to avoid all things Ottawa last season. So really, I'm asking...Is he that bad, or is he a combo of being mediocre and a whipping boy?...Kind of like Zaitsev

You mean Gardiner who took more grief from the fans then anyone else.

I guess all I can say to that is that the people I've heard say that he's legitimately "that bad" the last few days aren't Sens fans but analytics types. So I don't think it's just about how he was seen by the hometown fans.

Good to know.

Pending the Marner signing, the Leafs will have reached and exceeded the salary cap floor in signing bonuses this season.
