2020-2021 NHL Thread

Rumours abound RE: Kane and some of his teammates not wanting him around anymore.

I don't know the man, but shit sure follows him around...

Daily Faceoff projections, for illustration purposes only, as a marked increase in revenue projections could pay off the escrow balance more quickly and provide a significant salary cap rise once the debt is paid:

SEASON PROJ. SALARY CAP PROJ. REVENUE     ENDING ESCROW BAL
2021-22 $81.5 MILLION         $4.8 BILLION     $1.3 BILLION
2022-23 $82.5 MILLION         $5.4 BILLION     $0.98 BILLION
2023-24 $83.5 MILLION         $5.6 BILLION     $0.63 BILLION
2024-25 $84.5 MILLION         $5.8 BILLION     $0.20 BILLION
2025-26 $85.5 MILLION         $6.0 BILLION     PAID OFF
2026-27 $91.4 MILLION         $6.2 BILLION     N/A

Great. I'm sure the league will absolutely thrive with everyone other than Arizona having cap issues for the next 5 seasons.

Isn't the NHL great!

We have absolute no means to keep Rielly after this season and then one of Nylander/Matthews in 3 years.

I'm not worried.  The Leafs have a well-oiled machine of experts to draft and develop players that will come in on the cheap on ELCs and deliver superior performance per cap dollar to alleviate the cap crunch.

Rielly, sure. But at the rates we've been seeing lately I've got little interest in bringing him back anyway.

Matthews and Nylander are a little bit different. They'll be UFAs after the 23/24 season so teams will still be looking at 2 more years of mostly-flat cap growth at that point. They'll be looking at raises but I don't think they'll be massive ones. Muzzin, Brodie, and Mrazek's contracts all (not coincidently) expire that offseason too so that's almost $14.5mil in cap space right there. So I just think it's a little early to say they'll for sure be cap causalities.

The retention of Kessel's salary expires at the same time, so if you want to, you can consider it a 2.2M cap raise for the Leafs  ::)

That's basically Campbell's potential raise then.

This is not the usual insiderrrr channel, but the fit is there on both sides and we've heard NYR was working on it.
Valiquette is verrrry tied into the Rangers org.

tldr it all but if you have time here's a deep dive into the guy who created Gritty and is generally considered the Zeus of Mascotry:

I wonder if he created our very own Carlton The Bear, which is kind of the anti-Gritty.

What do you think the package looks like?

How much variation could there possibly be?

Are they looking for a package that grows with time and hands on development? Or something with a more immediate showing to placate their fanbase?

What other packages are in play that might entice the Sabres to grab a different offer?

Yeah, that's kind of why I was asking you.

You're good at estimating the size/extent of packages and what they would bring in different scenarios.

I'd be surprised if Kakko wasn't involved as sort of the main young player. Then maybe a 1st and a 2nd and maybe another of NYR's better prospects like Schneider and I think that's about as well as Buffalo could hope to do.

I think it just comes down to fit; not just strictly the package size or whatever. Are you moving in the same direction in life and is there alignment with your values? The main thrust of it will centre on that general direction. There's a big commitment to be made. Everyone has to put in the work to ensure there is some measure of satisfaction for everyone involved.

I think the Sabres are looking for growth potential, even though historically their focus has been on expecting immediate results. Frankly they're just not good at coaxing growth from their prospects. Ristolainen, for example, is pretty much all down years.

I suppose, but sometimes you just have to grind it out and see what comes out in the end.
