Leafs placed both Wayne Simmonds (retro to Feb 6) and Jack Campbell (retro to Jan 24) on Long Term injured Reserve today.

Campbell will be eligible to return Feb 18th against Ottawa (though, being as he hasn't skated since getting hurt, as far as I know, that seems optimistic).

Simmonds will be eligible for the March 3rd game in Edmonton, but more realistically, he's probably not back until March 19th against Calgary.

Mikheyev in the top-6 alert.

Still would have liked to see Anderson get a game at 3RW.

I rather have Sandin or Lehtonen today than Dermott. I can only see that solidifying as time passes. Dermott's skill set not required on this roster. I appreciate the D depth though.

If for any of several reasons Dubas might choose to make a bold move within the duration of Rielly's contract and trade him, with Burke in Pittsburgh would the Penguins be a potential trade partner?

Uh, I don't see that in particular happening...

I'm just looking at Rielly in general. He's under contract until the end of next year, on a relative bargain contract at $5M for an offensive defenseman. Analytically, he's considered a poor defender on a team that happens to have some degree of defensive depth. I think he's got good trade value for his skill-set and contract provided trade partners over-value his defensive skills.

It's very easy not to trade him. I think he's a popular teammate and a big part of a very successful power play, and he moves the puck well on a team that capitalizes on puck movement. But, given his defensive deficiencies, there are a number of defensemen on the team that could replace a lot of what Rielly brings, particularly when you consider what Rielly will likely command on his next contract in 2022. With the cap, they may not be able to re-sign him even if they want to. I could see Dubas acting well before his hand is forced.

Burke's not the Pens GM, but he does have some degree of attachment to Rielly. They don't have much of a prospect pool to dip into, but if they're giving away any more first-rounders...  Ah, I miss Rutherford so much...

Nope.  If Pittsburgh wants Rielly it's to keep their limited window open.  They don't have anything on their roster that is going to upgrade the Leafs window and they don't have a deep prospect pool if we are just accepting a downgrade in roster for future returns.

They have 2 million in cap space with a 17 man roster heading into next year and none of their salaried players that are hypothetically good (Malkin, Guentzel) remotely fit under our cap.

I do think we will need to think about trading Rielly though due to impending loss of him in free agency the year after.  It's either keep Rielly and lose the depth of Hyman/Kerfoot/Holl/guys in theSimmonds vein or have better roster depth with a downgrade on the blueline.

The issue with trading Rielly is that, ultimately, until Sandin or someone else is able to take his spot, you?ll need to replace him with another defenceman who can move the puck well. The veteran guys on the roster who will still be under contract don?t do that at a high enough level.

The Malkin? reply is primarily a joke meme response but a three way trade with a double max retention puts Malkin?s cap hit at 2.375M :)

But seriously I was thinking Kyle Palmieri would be an interesting fit among pending UFAs, if they can figure out the cap gymnastics.

There's a lot of Twitter stumping for Alex Iafallo, given his position, playstyle, and Dubas' penchant for trading with LA.

Don't look now but Freddie's numbers are climbing.  Now up to .908% on the season despite a slow start.  Hopefully he gets up past .916 his career average which would mean solid goaltending the rest of the way.

Probably makes more sense from a cap and cost to acquire point of view.

I'm likely getting ahead of myself, but I do wonder if the Leafs should be really trying to go for it this year. It's possible that Simmonds and Thornton are one-and-dones. It's possible we lose one or both of Hyman and Andersen as UFAs. It's possible we lose both Dermott and Lehtonen for different reasons cutting into our defence depth. And last but maybe most important, it's basically guaranteed that these new divisions give us the best path to the Finals that we'll get for the foreseeable future.

I say this in relation to the Leafs being linked to some mystery winger. Fingers crossed regarding injuries, but we likely only have one forward opening on the team so even though Iafallo seems like a decent fit I wouldn't mind trying to aim a little higher.
