2022-23 NHL Thread

The NHL awards show continues to be basically completely pointless but the Hart voting results showed McDavid almost unanimously winning the Hart trophy:

The search is on for whoever only gave him a 5th place vote (it wasn't Haggerty in Boston).

Has to be whoever have Pasta a 1st place vote, doesn't it? Otherwise, it would mean that person completely left McDavid off their ballot.

Shocked it's not Haggerty.

Also, who they hell did the give their 2nd, 3rd. and 4th place votes to? Yikes.

The McDavid 5th place Hart vote was by Seth Rorabaugh. He went:

1. Pasta
2. Robertson
3. Sorokin
4. Tkachuk
5. McDavid

IIRC he has a history of pretty odd voting habits. But this one certainly takes the cake.

This one reads a lot like he was voting with a points system and was giving McDavid 5 pts.

Bananas. Not putting McDavid at 1 is bad enough, but putting Robertson at 2 and Sorokin ahead of Tkachuk? Ridiculous.

Maybe he's taking a strict reading of the trophy description? Most valuable to the team and he's like: "they have Draisitl too".

I don't know. It just doesn't make sense.

It's the same guy who left McDavid and Matthews off his ballot the year before. He's just a troll being a troll and looking for attention.

Probably shouldn't be voting the guy with the Selke and Vezina winners as your first place Hart vote then.  That kind of kills that argument.

The thing I've never really understood about that argument is that it seems to imply there's a sort of ceiling at which value stops being "valuable". Like, and I know you can't, but if you could reduce a player's value to a single number then if McDavid had a value of 100 and Pastrnak had a 80 then Pastrnak isn't "more valuable to his team" simply because his teammates are worse than McDavid's because every bit of McDavid's value is still contributing to his team winning games. Basically it's saying that so long as a team makes the playoffs, every win above that plateau is effectively meaningless.

"Most valuable to his team" isn't the same thing as "Most valuable to his team relative to his teammates".

Another instance where googling could have saved an organization a chunk of money, and where a documented b-hole fails upward into an undeserved windfall, while the victim just gets re-re-traumatized.

I don't know if any of you have been playing Immaculate Grid but now that Sports Reference owns it they've come out with a hockey version:

immaculategrid.com/hockey

Idea is pretty simple. You have nine guesses to try and fill the grid with players that fit into each box while trying to get the lowest possible score by going with the answer the fewest people answered. So if the column is Maple Leafs and the Row is 50 goal scorers, well, you'd score better with Rick Vaive than Matthews.

There's also a similar game puckdoku.com, so you can have 2 games a day.

Babe Dye never hit 50. Too few games in a season back then.
