Keefe giving a very clear signal to the other bottom-6ers who are trying to make a mark for that final spot to put up or waive goodbye.

Eh... Clifford and Simmonds could have the game of their absolute lives on Friday and it wouldn't make any difference. This is just them splitting up the teams for the final pair of pre-season games.

Here's a cap-compliant roster (while Lil is on LTIR) I found on capgeek. 13 forwards (including ZAR at $750K, NAK, Malgin, Robertson), 6 D (with Mete in place of Holl)

Benn's cap hit ignored, which I don't think we can do if he isn't LTIR'd but maybe he will be?

$622,717 in cap space, which appears 28K shy of what we would need to replace Mete with Lil when he recovers.

I'd be tempted to cut NAK when Lil recovers simply because NAK makes $1M instead of the minimum and that $250K difference is enough to bring back Lil.

PS: I couldn't figure out how to upload an image of my own into a post like vs link one from the web.  (Though perhaps administrators don't want to support the space needed to host images?)

Roster for tormorrow

Speculated lines
Potential #Leafs lines tomorrow based on the announced roster (fair bit of guessing here):

Robertson-Holmberg-Malgin
Abruzzese-Gaudette-Steeves
McMann-SDA-Anderson
Clifford-Shaw-Simmonds
Ellis

Kral-Sandin
Mete-Villeneuve
Rifai-Hollowell
Kokkonen

Samsonov
Kallgren

Ignoring Samsonov & Sandin, Robertson & Malgin seem to be the only two playing tomorrow with a legit shot at making the roster. Depending on a trade, someone else might survive as an extra

Shouldn't Gaudette be centering Robertson & Malgin if he was still in the hunt?

Might be an exercise in "Let us minimize getting our NHL roster hurt tomorrow. We have enough cap gymnastics with the current IR"

I guess the full NHL roster will play Saturday.

I played around on Cap Friendly

There are too many unknowns.

However, if Tavares & Benn start the season on IR with Liljegren & Dahlstr?m on LTIR and they sign Aston-Reese for $850k that has been reported, they do not have much room.
They would have about $70,000 free cap space with a roster size of 17 including goalies - unable to take on Robertson or Malgin.
Maybe they try to get some relief with Emergency Roster Exceptions. I'm not sure they can do that.

Either someone has to go on LTIR to buy them some time or a trade has to happen. Simmonds remarked it was the deepest team he had been around. In part, one could argue that it is because they have more talent than they can fit on a roster. Something has to give.

Thanks. Engvall probably won?t be on LTIR ? which means keeping Malgin, Robertson, Aston-Reese and AK isn?t possible.  I think AK has looked the worst, but preseason games aren?t really a very good indicator and I may be undervaluing AK?s strengths.  I?m guessing Malgin is going to be exposed to waivers at some point ?

Shouldn't they be signing Aston-Reese to an actual contract by now?

Pretty likely completed via handshake by now, but not on pen and paper because it'll be more effective to wait until they sort out their LTIR situation first. Derek Stepan is currently in the same situation with Carolina right now.

The best part of NHL hockey.  Injured players potentially meaning we might not be able to ice a complete roster because we need a system to keep a team playing in front of 5000 people afloat....or you know that Senators team that magically had money to spend when their garbage owner died.

Nicky Bobby doing his part to make sure we are cap compliant: put everyone on LTIR

I hate the hard cap as much as the next person, but this is kinda on the Leafs for having a 21-man roster that when healthy is about $1.4mil over the salary cap and not really doing anything about it.

Maybe this is an answer for their cap issue:
Tavares on IR
Liljegren, Benn (?), Dahlstrom on LTIR

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
_______-Kerfoot-Nylander
Engvall-Jarnkrok-Malgin
AstonReese-Kampf-AubeKubel

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Giordano-Sandin

Murray
Samsonov

They play one game short a man and then call up Robertson on emergency recall (I'm not positive of that rule due to Covid changes and I just don't know it that well) until Tavares can return.

That would fit under the cap without a major trade.

Mete, Simmonds, Anderson, Clifford, Gaudette & Hollowell would be waived.

Benn would have to be waived when he returns from the LTIR
Something else would have to give in terms of players on the roster when Liljegren's $1.4 mil returns from LTIR - unless someone else goes on LTIR.

So it is possible, they do not HAVE to do a significant trade ...
But they have no breathing space or extra for their road trips.
