2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

I'm still not exactly sure how I feel about the Leafs going into a camp with a specific plan to give Nylander an extended look at centre in order to have a line-up capable of running 3 strong lines and for that plan to go up in smoke after 2 pre-season games (one of which Nylander was the best player in) in favour of a 19-year old junior calibre player.

From that article:

Random tidbit: Sheldon Keefe has the highest percentage of correct challenges in NHL history, with a minimum of 10. The list:

Sheldon Keefe: 93.8% (15 correct, 1 wrong)

Jay Woodcroft: 87.5%

Jim Montgomery: 75%

Jeremy Colliton: 70%

D.J. Smith: 69.9%

Man I knew that the Leafs have been pretty good with these but I didn't realize that they've only lost 1 challenge in the Keefe era.

And of course as an aside it's not exactly Keefe specifically who deserves the accolades for this.

YES.

https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/toronto-maple-leafs/latest-news/how-the-maple-leafs-dressed-for-their-halloween-party-on-wednesday-before-jetting-off-on-a-season-long-road-trip
The party featured team captain John Tavares going as a hippie. Mitch Marner went as the Pink Panther and Reaves dished on a group of four players (Auston Matthews, Morgan Rielly, Matthew Knies and Fraser Minten) who went as speedskaters.

"I heard they rollerbladed in too, so they were probably sweating on the way," Reaves said.

I really see no viable way for the Leafs to structure a suitable lineup with Reaves on it.

I wonder how long til Keefe benches him.

Shame about his cap hit too.

Holmberg called up. Keefe revealed that Bertuzzi has been playing a bit banged up so he might be due for a sit. Since he's a C could also be a Minten replacement.

After 4 games, it's not fair to pass judgment on Domi and Bertuzzi. For varying reasons, the slow start or disjointed play is to be expected. But man, it's tough not to look at their 4 games and say "that's it?"

Honestly, for me, they?re meeting the low expectations I had for them. Especially Domi, I?ve never been impressed with him and never had any interest in seeing him with the leafs.

MLHS I don't think are ever going to be Keefe's biggest fans but I think it's hard to deny the criticism in the FLA game recap of (1) Keefe's thermostat being set a little too low and (2) his tendency to overload the top line's minutes when the rest of the team isn't in sync.

I remain skeptical that Keefe is the guy who can lead the team deep.

Throwing out some love here to David K?mpf.  I for one thought it was a solid move to re-sign him.  Read the MLHS game summary for a good breakdown of how he contributed to the comeback.

Went to see Killers of the Flower Moon last night (fantastic) so I missed the Leafs game totally. Was nice to see Knies pot 2 and Domi actually contributing. What the hell with Samsonov though? A sparkling .250 save%????

Why do the Leafs play at 6 on Tuesday?  Is Arn making the schedule now?

All 32 teams are playing on Tuesday, so they're trying to make it with alternating starts.  So the Leafs game starts at 6, the next game starts at 6:15, the game after at 6:30, etc etc.

It's an interesting concept, and I'm curious to see how it goes.

I would have significantly more 3pm ET Leafs face offs on Saturdays and Sundays 🤣

(Currently watching Detroit v Calgary for exactly this reason)
