2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

It has been mentioned by some, but I don't think the arbitration process went well for Samsonov.  It's basically your employer laying out how and why you suck and don't deserve anywhere near what you asking for.

There was some talk, as there should have been, about Marner passing Mahovlich for 7th in all time scoring amongst the Leafs.

I thought I'd mention a few notable upcoming developments in that area for Rielly.

Among Leafs dmen, he is 4th all time in games played right now and 12th among all Leafs players. At the end of his current contract in 2030, when he is 35, if he's still a Leaf (he has a NMC), he may be ahead of George Armstrong for the most games ever played for the franchise.

Rielly, with 78 goals, is 6 goals away from moving into 4th place all time for Leafs goal scoring by a dman behind Salming, Turnbull & Horton with 83 goals. He projects to be second behind Salming in 2030.

Rielly, with 368 assists, is in 8th place all time for Leafs assists. He projects to be third or so depending on Matthews & Nylander, behind Salming in 2030. Rielly is currently 3rd all time among Leafs dmen behind Kaberle & Salming. He projects to pass Kaberle before 2030.

Rielly is currently 19th in total scoring for Leafs all time. He projects to be 8th and 2nd behind Salming among dmen in 2030.

Rielly is quietly having a great career.

Why have they recalled Samsonov without him even playing a game for the Marlies?  What do they expect to have changed?

Jones was not at practice. Might be ill .. ??

Marner is also quietly having his 4th straight 30-goal pace season. Since he came into the league, including rookie season, he's 38th for most goals scored by any player in the league. That might surprise some people.

He was also on the ice for a bit before practice with Samsonov and the goalie coach. So just trying not to overwork him any more than they kinda already are.

I was one of the ones rather loudly questioning his latest contract extension.  I was wrong.  Thanks for posting this context, cw.  Rielly also shut me and other doubters up with his playoff performances.

Rielly has always been a player I felt was unfairly criticized. He has always came exactly as advertised. Expecting a big, shutdown type Dman was never going to happen. Yes he's had a couple down years, but he's a very strong #2/#3 dman that most teams would count themselves lucky to have.

Good for them.
If Jones hadn't come in and performed as well as he did, we might be having a different conversation. Six teams in the Wild Card race are within 5 pts of the Leafs. Jones helped the Leafs maintain a little breathing space when their starters got injured or collapsed.
That's another goalie performance I could never have predicted.

OK, I can tone down my freak out now.

He's scored more goals in fewer games than Kadri as a Leaf.
He's scored more goals in fewer games than Norm Ullman (a HHOFer who enjoyed a resurgence on the Leafs as one of the first players to train during the summer)
If he's still here in a couple of seasons or so, he'll pass Wendel Clark on the all time Leafs goal scoring list.

Zero chance I would have ever predicted the above for Marner as the possibility wouldn't have entered my mind for consideration.

Knies? skate hit a rut and left leg got twisted. No contact on the play so hopefully just a mild sprain.

I agree, I was one calling for his head at one point, even though I love the guy. Perhaps Schenn did teach the dog a few new tricks as his play has generally be very good.

It's crazy how many points Matthews/Marner/Nylander have banked. In my head, when they grow up and mature as players maybe we'll win but we're right in the thick of it and...

Samsonov cleared waivers ... can they send him back down without waivers again?

Yes, he'll be exempt from waivers until he spends 30 days on the NHL roster or plays in 10 games. Then he'll need to clear waivers again before being sent down.

Sittler-McDonald-Thompson/Williams/Keon (Salming-Turnbull)
Gilmour-Andreychik-Clark
Sundin-Robert-Mogilny

We've had some good players that put up some decent numbers
But it is a team sport.

Can we please not mention "2030"?? I feel and am damn old enough as it is.
