Victor Johansson LD

He is a bean pole at 5?11? 137lbs on NHL data, but 6?1? 143lbs on EP.

That's, uh, something. Can't find anything on him in any rankings. He wasn't even on Corey Pronman's full mock draft.

Swedish junior league, so basically no public data. Two-way mobile defenseman is the EP?s player type tags on him. Cousin of Alex Wennberg.
So steal of the draft!!

Curious to learn more about him. But to encounter basically a draft coverage ghost even in the 4th round feels odd.

Seeing some of the moves like Thompson f
Going for pretty cheap...what are we doing.  Colorado arguably got a better trade down opportunity later in the first round than we did.  Getting a 7th round pick to swap the 58th pick also seems like a kind of meh move.

New Jersey moved out Marino which probably guarantees they are adding defense in free agency.

Mishandling the core 4 last offseason is going to make this a really frustrating offseason

Thommie Bergman still cooking?

Who are his best picks?

You'll rarely see scouts get directly credited to each pick of course but generally speaking he has a hand in the Swedish/Finnish based picks. An Athletic profile on him last year credited him for: Steen, Rask, Stralman, Stalberg, Komorov, Gunnarsson, Johnsson, Engvall, and arguably his best pick Nylander. In the article it's specifically said that Bergman was the one who influenced the team to pick him over Ehlers.

More recently Hirvonen, Niemela, Hildeby have come out of Sweden/Finland.

Did they really think Victor Johansson wouldn't be around for the 5th or later round?

Unfortunaley 2 of the best 3 guys were traded for essentially nothing.

There's actually proof this one exists! Pronman ranked him 79 in his rankings, saying...

Holinka played a limited minutes role in the top Czechia league. He was very good at their junior level and showed fine for the Czech U20 team. He's a center with intriguing pro tools. He's a good skater with strong puck skills who can beat defenders one-on-one with pace. I don't think he's a great playmaker or finisher but he's strong enough in both areas. Holinka has been a penalty killer in junior and for the national team as well. I like a lot about his game, but I don't know if he stands out enough in any area and with average size to have a clear NHL role.

Back to another player with very, very limited information online. But listed at just 6'0", 172 lbs. So interesting that the Leafs haven't exactly swung way into taking bigger players like some thought they would with Treliving (granted that wasn't exactly a trend Treliving had with the Flames either).

Good news: Grant McCagg thinks they're good picks!

Bad news: Wait Grant McCagg thinks they're good picks...

I would have liked the Thompson move for the Leafs. Would have shored up the G position at a very minimal cap hit for next season.

I don't know Bacon but he at least had Victor Johansson ranked: 1263rd overall
Someone else said he didn't crack their top 1000

I'm no scouting expert so ... they must have had their reasons to take him at 120 ...

I'm as big of a numbers guy as anyone, but TopDownHockey's draft rankings are virtually useless. It's just points, age, weight, height. Genuinely couldn't find a ranking I would put less stock in.

Treliving isn?t that good of a GM? I?m really starting to think Shanahan isn?t that much of anything either.
