2025-26 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

The biggest reason I am advocating for a full rebuild is that I think Matthews is done being the player he once was. How long has it been? He's only getting older. Maybe another reason Marner left, he knew Matthews wasn't going to return to form.
I've wondered the same thing.
Another thing I've started to wonder about: Marner was apparently popular in the room. Some of his mates might be ticked off at how that all went down. Or the DNA crack taken as a snipe at their character. I'm not in the room so I have no idea.

The PP is dreadful and he should go. If only we knew who employed him on their staff and has the team getting filled in every game
He was with Berube in St Louis ...
His PP was 24.8% last year, 13.3% this year.
[sarcasm]Clearly, the PP coach is the whole problem [/sarcasm]

Well, if one thing has become obvious over the past 10 years, Leaf management is never afraid to make the big move.

Watch, the pp will score a bunch of goals (because, eventually, some of those shots will go in) and it will be "problem solved"

If the players liked Savard they might take it to heart they are the reason he lost his job. Might wake them up a bit.

Small sample size but it was running around 10 percent 15 games into the season last year until they moved to the 5 forward PP and jettisoned Rielly to the moon. Granted we don't have a Marner to man the point but Treliving doing nothing to get any offense from the blue line screams from the rafters

Rielly can't appear on the PP anymore

I wonder if, once they moved to 5 forwards, Marner became the de facto PP coach (more or less implicitly guiding when & what plays to run as when he had possession at the point). People say the loss of Marner's on-ice puck skills has hurt the PP, but perhaps the Leafs lost their actual PP coach when Marner walked and Savard never really did anything to begin with...

I'm not as set on Rielly
He's still got good wheels. Not chronically injured.
Good head on his shoulders.
He seems to have another gear for the playoffs.
He has rung up a lot of points on the PP.

He's got a feathery point shot - not good except for maybe tipping but he can drift in from the point to finish
He's messed up defensively right now.
They've rarely found him a good partner.

But I suspect a change in coaching/system would help him.
So as frustrating as it has been with this team, I'm avoiding absolutes with him

Washington leads the East with 18 regulation wins. Toronto has 11 (tied for 13th in the East)
Tampa leads the East with 20 Regulation/OT wins. Toronto has 15 (tied for 11th in the East)
Boston leads the East with 120 goals for (13 from Minten/Steeves). Toronto has 109 (10th in the East)
Tampa leads the East with 95 goals against. Toronto has 118 (12th in the East)
Pittsburgh leads the East with a 29.2% PP. Toronto is 13.3% (last in the NHL)
Buffalo leads the East with an 85% PK. Toronto is 83.2% (3rd in the East)

Looking at goals saved above expected.

Joseph Woll is listed at 6.1 goals saved above expected on the season. That puts him at .652 saves above expected/60min
Dennis Hildeby is at 5.6 goals saved above expected on the season. That puts him at .518 saves above expected/60min
For goalies playing in at least 5 games that puts them at 19th and 27th in the league. So the Leafs have been getting good goaltending (albeit not best in the NHL) but have just fallen into a massive rut of miserable play.

We still have a secrecy problem with the Leafs. Matthews has problems but we won't talk about them. Nylander is clearly going through some sort of existential crisis and we won't talk about it. Tanev is close to returning but also not. Carlo has a set back and oh year by the way he had surgery. Stolarz might be dead because noone has seen him in a month.

With the way the team is playing it seems like its unrealistic to see them digging out of this hole but at the same time it does kind of feel like if there is a year to make a second half run...this would the year. The East is very much a jumbled mess.

Detroit is leading the Atlantic division right now. They have a 10 point lead on the Leafs. They have played 2 more games than the Leafs. They have scored 7 more goals than the Leafs and have given up 1 more goal. They have a -3 goal differential.

Montreal is 3rd in the Atlantic. They have 8 more points than the Leafs. They have played 1 more game than the Leafs. They have scored 8 more goals and have also given up 4 more goals. They have a -5 goal differential.

The other big elephant in the room is their schedule for the rest of the Year. After the Pittsburgh game there will be 46 games remaining.

Back-to-Backs: 9
3 games in 4 nights: 6
4 games in 6 nights: 5

January: 16 games
February: 5 games (9 eligible days to play due to the Olympic break)
March: 15 games
April: 7 games

Virtually Untouchable
Cowan, Knies, Woll

Would Need to be Blown Away
Matthews, Nylander, Tavares, Tanev

Willing to Move, but Would Take an Overpayment/Can't Say No type deal
McCabe, OEL, Stolarz, Rielly, Hildeby, most prospects 23 and under

Open to Moving, but not Rushing to Deal
Roy, Lorentz, Robertson, Rifai, older prospects

Gone to the Highest Bidder (due to contract status or need to move on)
Maccelli, Joshua, Jarnkrok, Laughton, McMann, Carlo, Mermis, Stecher, AHL vets

Please Take Them
Domi, Myers, Benoit, Thrun
Retool and try again... this team isn't drastically difference then last year. It's reasonable to assume their not this bad.

Been a long time since I've seen this much media negativity about the Leafs
"It is a great place to play when the team is doing well but ..."
