2025 Blue Jays

And with that my anticipated attendance at Jays games this year is zero.

What a joke of a franchise.

Zero playoff wins. A top 10 payroll. A bottom 1/3 farm system.

Atkins and Shapiro have been a massive failure that faces zero consequences. This is the easiest era to make the playoffs in MLB history. The AL East hasn't been the Yankees and Red Sox spending 100+ million dollars more than anyone else.

Why they aren't being walked out the back door is beyond me.
I can only imagine that Ed Rogers is at the helm, and Shapiro and Atkins are just doing his bidding...otherwise it really doesn't make any sense.

A top 5 payroll and stinking does feel like an ownership meddling problem.
Nope. This is how the Shatkins era went in Cleveland, too. They're very good at building a team up to near the point of contention. They're no good at getting them past that. They should have been sent packing 2 or 3 years ago. The job they were able to do was basically done then. Instead, they were given more than enough time to undo the good they did.

I love Vlad. He's a great player, I want him to stay a Jay and I think he has earned a big contract.

That being said, Vlad has had a sub .800 OPS in HALF of the seasons he's played. For comparison, Soto has no seasons in the .700's OPS. Tatis and Acuna have 1 season a piece.

If Vlad wants a contract close to Soto and Ohtani, I just don't agree with his camp's valuation.

I've said it in here before, but I think people are really overestimating Guerrero's worth. He has absolutely no defensive value, negative base running value and absolute dreadful baseball IQ. Add that to the fact that his weight and game shape have been an issue almost every year so having him signed to a 500M, long-term contract could very quickly turn into a disaster of a contract. He literally has to continually hit at his lucrative 2nd half last season pace to justify anywhere near that amount of $.

I just don't understand why they wouldn't go the trade route, particularly since they are still "contending." Going into the season with your two "marquee" players on expiring contracts doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

We’ll give Ohtani a billion dollars… but not Vlad half of that.
Ohtani got 700M (and Soto even more). I'm not sure what numbers Vlad's camp is spouting, but if he wants anywhere in the 500M and over amount, that is an absolutely crazy number, and huge risk, for the Jays.

Part of the reason Vlad didn't receive a giant contract offer from the Jays was Vlad's own fault. In 2023, Vlad had a 2.0 WAR, 26 HR, 94 RBI, .788 OPS. Doesn't exactly scream 'insane long term offer'.

Part of Vlad wanting to be here is meeting the Jays half way. He has to acknowledge that his play on the field has been spotty at times.

I'm so curious what Vlad's number, that the Jays "didn't get close to" actually was. If it was 10/$400M, I suspect it would have been done. Where was the Jays line? $500M? 15 years and $750?

If the Jays had offered him 10 years, $300M two years ago, in line with what used to be the crazy money, management would have been fired a year ago and look like geniuses now.

I'm guessing Vlad was somewhere in the $450-$500 range.

It'll require Vladdy having another monster year but I wouldn't be surprised if someone ponied up $550 in free agency.

What I'm saying is that there is no way that Shapiro and Atkins are negotiating a $400-$500m contract themselves...this contract is most certainly being run through Rogers because of its dollar value. Ed Rogers would be the one turning down whatever the last numbers were from Vladdy's camp, and it sure looks like they're not just a couple of million bucks apart here.

Well, if Vladdy is asking for near Soto money, turning that down is probably the right call. If he's asking for more along the lines of $35M per for 10-14 years, that's a tougher call - should probably sign him for that, though.

Do we really want to commit 10 years to a player like Guerrero? At that large of a number?

I don't follow as closely as many of you, but I've always viewed him as very inconsistent. Sure, when he's on, like he was for the latter half of 2024, he's a game changer. But if he's playing like he did for the first half, he's average at best.

Yes, what is the alternative? It could very well be Delgado situation where he's the best player on a garbage team but at least we'll have him.

I most definitely would.

Well, apparently David Ortiz just "leaked" the numbers that Guerrero's camp were looking for: 13 years, 585 million.....https://www.bluejaysinsider.com/mlb-team/toronto-blue-jays/red-sox-legend-david-ortiz-leaks-vladimir-guerrero-asking-price

Given that the Jays started early on with offering 10 years and 350 Million, and that they ultimately "weren't close" with their final offer, that probably tracks.

Yeah. He needs another 5+ WAR season to justify anything near that ask. He has potential for that, but he doesn't have the track record for it.
