4 Nations Face-Off

Here’s the deal, Marner:
The Leafs unretire #93 with Gilmour’s blessing for him and he signs 8 years at 93M total but defers down to an AAV of 9.3M and is a hero for life in Toronto regardless of result.

I was hoping Willy would have done the same with 88.

But this team loves to leave a tip.

Willy did, but he earned the leverage to pick his Dad's number (92) instead of his own.

It's just wishful thinking; Marner is going to push for a contract north of 100M if it's 8 years (i.e. 12.5M+ AAV)..

Marner's next contract is $12.5m/8-years.
I think if you put this offer in front of Marner July 1st last year there's a decent enough chance he signs it. Although remember that was coming off a pretty rough playoff performance.

But now, with the future cap numbers mostly officially skyrocketing and Marner going into the break 5th in the league in points (a feat made even more impressive considering Matthews' status this season), and that's a pipe dream.

Yep, he'll want Draisaitl money as his ask now.

Marner isn't as good as Draisaitl so if he wants Draisaitl money, he walks.

At some point the Leafs have to put their foot down. While it would suck if Marner walks, the Leafs could finally try to flush out a more balanced roster.

The caveat being, if the Leafs win the Cup, and Marner has a good playoffs, he can have all the money.

Last year I went to the All Star Game in Toronto. Except for seeing and even talking to some celebs in hockey.... it was meaningless.

Im pumped the NHL is doing something different this year. I'll watch most of the games.

Greta Bar downtown toronto will have a watch along party for the US Canada showdown on Saturday night.

He's not as good as Draisaitl but he can legitimately claim to be the best overall player on the Leafs. Matthews is a better goal scorer (plus plays center) but Marner is by far and away the best playmaker, so good defensively and an excellent penalty killer. I think he'll ask for at least what Matthews is getting and probably more, and will probably get it - especially with the cap going up. The caveat is what happens in the playoffs this year. None of the "big 3" have yet to particularly distinguish themselves as players who can carry a team in the playoffs. Maybe they do this year.

Very funny (to me) that Marner is left on PP2 (through no fault of his own)
Marner is 5th in PP scoring since he came into the league among Canadian forwards on that roster.
That alone shouldn't shock his placement on PP2
He's clearly behind McDavid, MacKinnon, Crosby & Makar.
Reinhart is there to provide the finish the rest of them lack relative to Reinhart.
McDavid & MacKinnon give the PP1 ample world class puck distribution from the forwards that Marner provides.

i can't recall a time when Canadian goaltending looked so weak in a best on best type tournament.
If it gets ugly, at least the tournament is short.

Willy has shown up in the playoffs.

He scored 5 goals in the MTL series and got clutch goals against Boston and has generally been the best of the Big 3 over the past several playoffs. But agree that no one has yet to carry the team.

I won't be watching but I did look at the rosters and Canada is WOWWOWWOW ... until you get to the goalies. Then it's whowhowho.

The final scores of Canada's games might be closer to the ASG than you think.

I don't seem to have much interest in watching. It has a level of importance like an ASG

The level of importance might be similar, but the calibre of play should be significantly higher. The players actually seem to care about this one. It should be much more entertaining, at the very least.
