A thread speculating about possible lines? Already?!

Does anyone think Rynnas has a legit shot at beating Scrivens for backup?  I feel like his size gives him an advantage at the NHL level.

Probably not. My guess is the team would rather see how he does handling the starting job with the Marlies.

With the short training camp, the Leafs probably won't even bother bringing 3 goalies in.

Not unless they bring in someone who is not currently in the organization.

I never heard any rumors about this, but fwiw:

@TSNBobMcKenzie

There were also lots of Kulemin not coming back to TOR rumors but his agent told me last night rumors are false and Kulemin will be in TOR.

Gotta love some of the meathead responses to McKenzie's tweet.

According to Metalurg Magnitogorsk website (in Russian) Malkin, Kulemin as well as Gonchar left the team...

DEFENSEMEN
Carl Gunnarsson / Dion Phaneuf
J-M Liles / Mike Komisarek
Subban / Holzer

Subban was practicing with the Leafs so while Gardiner might be out because of his Injury Subban can take his place lol

There were a bunch of non-Leafs skating with the Leafs at the mastercard center not just Subban.  I guess all the players in and around the GTA area.  Wouldn't it be nice if we could keep all the homegrown talent here? :)

With max contracts all being the same there is the possibility

Practice Lines
Forwards:
Lupul - Connolly - van Riemsdyk
Lombardi - Bozak - Kessel
MacArthur - Grabovski - Kulemin
Frattin - Kadri - Komarov
Brown - McClement
Steckel - Orr

Defence:
Gunnarsson - Phaneuf
Liles - Komisarek
Mottau - Kostka
Holzer - Fraser
Rielly

Goaltenders:
Reimer
Scrivens

If Connolly can regain his scoring touch I'd be inclined to try him on the 1st line again.

Lupul - Connolly - Kessel
JVR - Grabovski - MacArthur
Kulemin - Bozak - Frattin
Brown - Mcclement - Steckel

How much do you love that 3rd line eh?

I think this is closer to what it should be opening night.  Kulemin should not be given a sport on the 2nd line based on his play last year.  I think that sport is JVR's to lose.

I really do t think its fair to penalize Kulemin based on last year if he really shows he can bring it to camp.

Also you're forgetting Lombardi.

Its going to be an interesting camp because, as Carlyle said, the team will be picking the best players in general. So if some players show they can bring it and staff feels like it will be on a consistent basis then they're in.

Keep in mind you have Komarov, Kadri, Frattin, McClement, Steckel and Brown are all fighting for what seems to be 3 spots available. People seem to forget that we actually have a ton of forwards (and hopefully we can trade a few for useful pieces).

I purposely left out Lombardi. Honestly don't see a spot for him on this team. He doesn't even deserve a spot based on last year's play. Either way, I'm sure as hell not going leave out Frattin because of Lombardi. Matt also doesn't belong on the 4th line, so he's SOL.

If it were up to me today, for my top nine, I'd roll;

Lupul / Bozak / Kessel
JVR / Grabo / Kulemin
Mac / Kadri / Frattin

Connolly would fill in for Kadri when the kid's brain cramps but if we're going with youth, that's the way it's got to be in spite of what Connolly makes... and Kadri is just going to have to get whipped into figuring out how to play in his own zone.

EDIT: It also goes without saying that if Kadri in the line-up this year means a few extra loses, I'm fine with it.

Edit II: The only sure thing I'd know about my 4th line is that McClement centres it. I'd probably have Steckel as a winger (also can use him on the draw) so it would be between Komorov and Brown to earn that last winger spot.

Solid post chief, I think I agree.

I had something similar which also canned Connolly and Lombardi...

Joffrey Lupul James van Riemsdyk Phil Kessel
Nikolai Kulemin Mikhail Grabovski Nazem Kadri
Clarke MacArthur Jay McClement Matt Frattin
Mike Brown David Steckel Leo Komarov
Tyler Bozak

I have Bozak as a place holder, as I believe he is going to be traded with a defenseman, for Luongo. I'll also note, that I don't want Luongo here, but I have a feeling it will happen.

@mirtle: Sounds like Carlyle and Connolly have had some heart to heart meetings. Player wants to do more. Coach suggests he'll play in top nine Fs

the more I listen to carlyle talk the more I think he is going to play a style that suits the players.  No top 6 bottom 6 but 3 pretty good scoring lines and 1 checking line.  All I have to say about that is FINALLY!

I hope that's the case. either the coach needs to adapt to the players (and to some degree vice versa) or the GM needs to get the players to suit the proposed model. I think that was the biggest friction between Burke and Wilson. Burke preached a certain style but didn't give Wilson the players to play it.

The way he stated it made a lot of sense. He said its the teams responsibility to put players in the lineup in a way that promotes success. For example you can't place a scorer at the AHL level in a checking role in the NHL.

I think Connolly and Lombardi can still be useful and if anything can be traded.to make room for more roster spots for Kadri and Frattin.

I think not only is it unfair to leave Connolly and Lombardi off the roster based on last year (everyone who ever had an off year would never play again), but it'd also unrealistic. If Lombardi and Connolly beat out Frattin and Kadri at camp then that's tough. Moreover, Kadri and Frattin are easier to send up and down and I  doubt MLSE is cool with having $8m sitting in the press box.

Coming up with lines is all well and good but the reality of the situation can't be ignored.

Nikolai Kulemin Mikhail Grabovski Clarke MacArthur

Mike Brown David Steckel Leo Komarov
Nazem Kadri

I actually have an opposing viewpoint now. I'd like to have Luo in net to help settle down our young and promising defenders, and give the whole team a better sense of security, but I have a feeling that that opportunity is starting to slip away.

Gillis appears to be ready to gamble that once the season starts other team will recognize a need to upgrade in net and give him more than whats being offered right now.....
