I get what they're doing, but can't help but think surely they could have gotten at least a little bit of a better return.  :-\

If they coulda, they woulda.

Yep. That's the best bid they got ... which may be absolutely nothing depending on the condition.

A condition I've got is I'm not too crazy about the GM who made a hunk of the mess being part of the fire sale ...

We can only hope that Shanahan has to approve anything Nonis proposes.  God help us if Shanahan is dumb enough to do otherwise.

Also remember when we let a 2-week period of meaningless hockey decide that we should keep Ashton over Colborne? Good times.

Personally I think Brandon Kozun should replace JVR.

I do remember getting into a rather heated argument with a few people on here who insisted that he just needed more icetime.  Uh, no.  He never showed anything, ever.

He needed more ice time to make a determination on him.  The argument was always we had no clue what he was or wasn't.  The more ice time could always have ended in him not being good enough.

Condition of the draft pick: If Ashton plays in 15 games with #TBLightning next season the #Leafs will receive a 2016 7th round pick

Not bloody likely.  Has he even played 15 for us.

So it was us who were arguing, I guess?  Anyway, it's a dead horse now.

played golf today with some tight internal connections into the NHL, he said that something is in the works to rid us of the Pylon.  Lets hope so.

He's being moved for a conditional 1st but the condition is that he has to not suck so.....

If he's planning a hit or something, you should probably keep that to yourself.

Yeah. I actually won't be surprised if he becomes a decent contributor for the Bolts. I don't think he'll be a top 6 forward or anything, but a solid 3rd line winger? Definitely a possibility.

Not overly concerned about the deal, though. One of the things the Leafs need to do is clear out some of the deadwood deeper in the system, and this deal does some of that.

Also, if the Leafs are dealing some players for picks, that means bringing guys up and perhaps some prospects coming back to fill out the Marlies.  They'll likely need some contract wiggle room for that.

So, it's quite possible the Leafs will receive no compensation for this trade. Is that even possible with the current CBA?

Yes. Happens quite frequently. Either in this way with conditional picks that never get met or the old "future considerations" that never materialize into anything.

But really, like others have mentioned, the "compensation" that the Leafs received is in the fact that they opened up two spots on their contract reserve list. That could prove to be very valuable in the coming weeks.

Alright, cool.

Had to ask because I've only seen conditional picks change from one round to another, or one year to another, or getting an extra pick depending on the conditions of the trade. Hadn't seen 'becomes no pick' if conditions aren't met.

I can't think of a similar trade off the top of my head.

In the limited number of games I saw Ashton play, I never really saw anything in his game that said "keeper", even for the 4th line. That doesn't mean he won't have a productive role somewhere else.

In contrast, someone like Frattin...every so often he has a game (or a few shifts) where you say "man, this guy has potential"...he's big enough to hit effectively and has some obvious offensive skills. However, for some reason he can't sustain it. He's one of the more frustrating prospects I've seen come through the Leafs system in recent years.

The Leafs made a couple when Burke was in charge. In separate deals, they traded conditional picks for Brad May and Aaron Voros, that were both contingent on the Leafs signing the player to a new contract before July 1st. In both cases, the Leafs did not, and, therefore, did not give up anything to add the player. The Frattin/D'Amigo deal was similar. The condition on the pick in that deal was either Columbus signs D'Amigo to a new contract or they get the Leafs' 7th round pick in this year's draft. Since they signed D'Amigo, no pick.
