Auston Matthews

Seriously...in any other year a final 3 of Nylander, Marner and Murray would be a fantastic calder class.  None were nominated.

Slight correction: none are finalists. It's quite likely each of them got some votes.

Surprised Nylander didn't get a nod, he was the only rookie to win rookie of the month twice this season.

Who would he bump though? Matthews and Laine had demonstrably better years and Werenski had a year that gets better the more you look at it.

Yeah I can't argue with Werenski up there, but Nylander was deemed the best rookie in the league for 2 months out of the 6 it was handed out.  There could have been a case for him in the top 3.

Doesn't that just mean that he had a streakier year than other guys? Matthews and Laine still outpointed him. The case for him has to be a case against someone else. Do you think he had a better year than Matthews, Laine or Werenski?

After just watching probably the best series in these playoffs Matthews needs to be given the C now. That kid is a beast and I love the fact he looked absolutely pissed off they lost. He came to play every game and was the biggest threat the whole series. His compete level is off the chart. He's not just a very good player, he's one of the best in the league right now.

In the playoffs there is little time and little space. Size, skill and intangibles come to the forefront. Auston Matthews is a Toronto Maple Leaf.

I dug around a little bit more into this topic: using the toe of the blade to manipulate the puck with centripetal force (a la the Michigan/Crosby lacrosse goal) is a staple crossover from the game of floor ball, which is extremely popular in Europe, particularly Finland, Sweden, as well as Switzerland and Germany.

Judging by the way Matthews has toe picked pucks out of feet/off the boards, he picked up quite a few things while playing in Switzerland to complement his in-close stick handling from mini-ice in Arizona. Marc Crawford noticed this while coaching the ZC Lions in players who grew up in the European game. Transferrable techniques and playstyles from other sports bled into the way players processed and executed their games.

It's going to be a fun off season, especially with our rookies getting more rest and training than they had last off season (no Mem Cup, World Championship, World Cup, World Juniors), and a chance to start sharing things like this with one another.

So Dreger already named him captain on Twitter.  When do you think the Leafs make it official?

Midway through the offseason.  I think it's hard to imagine him not being named captain at this point.  He's already the teams best player and I think we have seen a huge level of maturity out of him.  He's not a typical NHL rookie.

I'd imagine, at the very least, they'll wait until after the Cup finals. So, probably around draft day.

For which I am relieved.

Good. None of these guys need it so unless they're dying to go, I'm happier if they don't.

He said his body his pretty exhausted. I'd like him to get a full summer of proper rest and working out in advance of next season. Maybe some casual floor ball.
