Auston Matthews

Watching that replay closely, Petry was pissed off at Lehkonen for drifting over toward Marleau instead of staying with Matthews, as he directed.  Gives a little "WTF?" move with his glove right after the goal.

the slo mo makes it look a lot worse of a play. I think Lehkonen pivoted a split second late and the puck was in the net.

Look how high and forward the top hand is there on the catch and release to help him get immediate elevation off the cradle with near-zero backstroke. Most players would normally only think to bat at the puck and try to chip it with an open blade for height (often just shooting it into the pads). Matthews angles his upper body for this shot before even receiving the puck and uses the reception to load the quick flick of the wrist, levering from the top hand and using the natural kick of the stick.

Remember that goal against Holtby in game 6? Similar thing, where the full shot is almost independent of his footwork.

Auston Matthews on adjusting to the Toronto weather and how big a coat he needed. Probably.

I actually think things like that are a really good thing. If Matthews has bigger goals than just being the latest mumbly superstar repeating cliches it's good for him to know that playing in a relatively small market like Canada won't hold him back from achieving that.

Although the Beatles topped touring in '66. So that's not a great line.

He honestly has the ability to be the biggest star in hockey for the fact that he's from the southern U.S. and is insanely talented.  The American media will eat that stuff up because they love talking up their own success stories.  He may be in a "small market" when comparing Canada to the U.S. but in hockey terms he's in the biggest market possible so his star will only be that much brighter for it.  I think he's starting to realize just how big a deal it is for him to be a star on the Leafs.  He seems to be taking to it quite well now that the Lou shackles are off

Right out of the gate we know that what allows [Matthews] to do the things I?m going to mention are rooted in his footwork. I personally always struggled to keep my feet moving while shooting (read: couldn?t do it), but even some of the best in the game can?t. If you look at Matthews? linemate William Nylander the past couple years, the huge bulk of his shots go in after he sets his feet to maximize the force of the shot, while steadying for accuracy. He has a great shot, sure, but that?s just one way Matthews is different from your average good-to-great shooter.

I sort of think the specific markets players play in don't really mean much. If you look at the guys who tend to have big national profiles in Canada it's guys who play for Team Canada, not specific Canadian teams. This is pretty reasonable as you're not going to pay a lot of money for a Toronto player to be in Montreal advertisements and vice-versa. Crosby and Toews though are inoffensive to everyone.

The issue for Matthews is going to be whether or not he can build a real profile for himself and gain national recognition in the States while playing in Canada. So, again, I think things like this are a good start to where he wants to be.

He's scoring at a 200+ point pace right now.  Sure, that's nothing compared to the 328-point pace he was on after the first game of his career, but on the plus side his fashion shoots are probably driving Lou crazy.

Some October highlights so far:

- Matthews has scored more goals having taken fewer shots
- became the first Leaf player of this era in carrying two points in the first four games
- also became the sixth player in franchise history to do so

The one with Auston spinning around and glaring with the Jason mask is like the start of a Toronto Powerplay ;)

Given your druthers, would you rather have Matthews score 60 - 70 goals but end up with less than 100 points, or would you rather have him score around 40 goals but end up over 100 points?

Whichever gets them deeper in the playoffs.

I'd rather he gets 36 points in the playoffs and wins the Conn Smythe on the road to the Cup

Irrelevant because at the end of the day he's contributing 100 goals whether he scores or assists.  It's going to be the same either way.

I would rather the latter because it'd be more indicative of Matthews having some talent around him instead of a one man army.
