Auston Matthews

So I've seen it floated today that the idea of a 6 year contract for Matthews is gaining traction.  That's certainly a way of getting over any perceived cap-crunch the next few seasons.  If both Matthews and Marner take 6 year contracts, the cap hits will be less than what is currently being thrown around for the full 8 years.  Deal with the 3rd contracts down the road.

I'd like to think that's true but I'm not entirely sure it is.

You think they'll get the same cap hit for 6 years that they would for 8 years?

I don't know about Marner but I think Matthews will more or less get the term and AAV he wants. I don't think Dubas will let Matthews sit the way he did Nylander to drive a hard bargain.

Teams pay more to buy those extra 2 UFA years.

Yeah it's not like doing a two-year bridge. Six years is a long time. Take millions less now so in 6 years I can get more, maybe?

This is going to bother Nik.

I've questioned Matthew's comfort level in front of the camera in his career so far but I gotta say I can see a big change in him lately. Listened to him on Leaf's Lunch today and he was comfortable, open, and funny. Neat to watch the transition as that part worried me as you can't turn our media off.

Tavares sets the story straight, as if the photo wasn't already proof enough.

Perhaps he's just older now? Pretty tough to know how to deal with the Toronto spotlight when you're 18

That was an awesome gesture by Matthews. He just gained a whole new set of fans in San Jose.

He's making his case for the C to stay.

In fairness you also hadn't been in front of a camera for years and weren't into your 2nd pro season.

So you're saying he should of been better as high school senior in front of 20 microphones, in a city with a media that's looking for a reason to eat you alive?

No, I'm saying I'm pleasantly surprised that he now seems to be embracing it rather than my previous thought that he might come to pretty much hate it and want to play elsewhere.

I think he loves the limelight, thank god he has a good family to keep his head from exploding, keep him level. I remember Tom Sellick at the height of his fame saying without his family the fame may have gone to his head. Hard not to I would think.
