Brendan Shanahan to be named president of Maple Leafs

The timing is a little bit obvious, no? But I guess providing a distraction for toronto media on a bad team performance is what a good executive does.

To be honest, and I'm probably alone, but I was a fan of Burke. You know the hockey decisions began and ended with him.

Adding layer upon layer of management doesn't accomplish much but make meetings longer.

I agree, but I also doubt that this is the last managerial decision we'll see from the Leafs this off-season.  They may yet trim the fat.

He may even be groomed to become the heir apparent to Leiweke as CEO of the entire MLSE sports conglomerate.

I can understand being involved in the hockey side of things, but CEO of a billion dollar company with no formal training in business?

Sounds like official announcement of Brendan Shanahan as new president of Toronto Maple Leafs will be made tomorrow in a news release.

The real question is who is going to host all the slick suspension videos now?

It's expected Shanahan's deputies -- Steph Quintal or Brian Leetch -- will head up @NHLPlayerSafety on interim basis for balance of season.

I believe Shanahan has the background to be successful in this position. As a player he won 3 Stanley Cups and was part of that Detroit dynasty which top to bottom was a great organization. Former teammate Stevie Y is doing a solid job in Tampa, so why not Shanny in Toronto?
As the NHL discipline boss he had to put up with all kinds of scrutiny which will serve him well dealing with the Toronto media.

Its a solid first step by Leiweke IF Shanahan is given a clean slate to work with rather than having to use the current management team.

Meh.  If he's not really in the decision chain then they can name Donaldo LeDuck to the position for the difference it will make.

I agree totally with Captain Canuck and would be totally stoked to see a hockey guy finally run the team instead of a suit.

Looks like the confirmation that the talks had occurred may have spurred the agreement to be announced more quickly. Per Puck Daddy:

"Why resign before the playoffs? With talks with Leiweke confirmed, there was no way Shanahan could effectively do his job without some sense of conflict of interest ? speaking with general managers each day that would, down the line, become trading partners for his new team."

I can't see Shanahan leaving his job with the NHL to come here to be a figurehead.

If you're saying Nonis is gone, then I'm in solidarity with you.

I'm in the "Nonis deserves to have his own coach" club right now. Shanahan hasn't really proved much in hockey ops, unless handing out suspensions is experience.

I'd also like to keep Morrison around, however agree with Busta from another thread that the pro-level scouts need to be changed. Loiselle can go and Fletcher, well he can keep making drinks for the management meetings.

Yes to all.

I remember back when he was a player, Shanahan laughing at the possibility of signing with the leafs... Something to the effect of him hating the city and the team... So yeah, glad he's here.

I could be remembering this wrong or it was just a crazy rumour but still...

I honestly don't see the value that he brings to the team at all.

I found a lot of Shanahan's discipline calls annoyingly baffling in terms of inconsistency/logic. Felt the same way about Campbell as well, so maybe its a function of the position.

Still, its somewhat soured me on the guy.
