The team has not been playing badly at all. Wins and losses happen and occasional stinkers happen. By and large the effort and attention to detail has been there. But some fans are living in the minute to minute aspect of the games and losing sight of the bigger picture.
100% agree with Joe and Busta.
This team has improved in terms of being able to play through a 7 game series or multiple 7 games series.
The team is heavier, more completion of checking, better defense and the goal tending is significantly more reliable. Berube has delivered 3 or 4 very well executed games. Against Boston last night was one of them. They still revert to the Old Leafs where they just rely on Out Talenting Out Scoring their opponents.... IF they feel like it. But we have already seen PROFESSIONALLY exected hockey games this year..... when I don't remember too many of those in prior seasons.
Tampa, Winnipeg, Boston were such games and I might even give them credit for the Rangers and Kraken, even if they lost the former and the latter is a mediocre team.
Honestly, as a hockey fan that likes eye test to notice nuanced excellence.... I am really appreciating the subtle improvements over the past two years, particularly this year.
Best way I can sum it up is before it felt like a bunch of individual cowboys showing off their individual skills and when truly tested their bond and execution fell a part. But now they are professional executioners that have a formula to play a game that can win against top teams and different styles.
[NB: I'm still expecting them to lose in the first round of the post season, primarily because the Core4 have demonstrated they don't have what it takes as a group to get it done, even win one round..... but doesn't mean I can't love the regular season play.....even when they lose...... like with the Rangers].
