Burke Fired

I hope the Leafs continue to be involved in the "You Can Play" program after Burke's departure.

I was always proud that my team was a big supporter of a very important cause.

Anselmi will personally cancel the program.

From various interviews over the years, Burke certainly gave the impression that Nonis was doing the bulk of the work...

At least that's my impression.

Dreger said the Phaneuf trade was pretty much a Nonis deal.

If, in fact, Burke's refusal to make a deal for Luongo played a part in his dismissal.

It's quite ironic that many of the people who called for Burke to be fired are many of the same people who don't want the Leafs to acquire Luongo and that Burke's dismissal might lead to Luongo joining the Leafs.

I'm not sure it's so cut and dried.  There's many people who both want and don't want Luongo.  I don't think it comes down to people that supported or didn't support Burke.

"many of the same..."

I wonder why there were only the Rogers and LeafsTV logos on the backdrop during the press conference. Surely Rogers and Bell can afford a new one, they've had since June to print a new one up.

OK, but why the hell did not they make their mind 2 weeks ago, not just 5 days into the season !!!!!! If they are so concerned about someone?s style, what this should tell us about their style?

That means nothing though, there's also "many of the same" people who love Burke and also want Luongo.

I can only speak for myself, as someone who both didn't like the job Burke did and who doesn't want Luongo, but what I'd say is that the only reason that acquiring Luongo is even being discussed is that Burke did such a poor job of building a team that there would be the sort of pressure around to trade for a guy like Luongo despite his terrible contract.

So it doesn't strike me as ironic but, rather, kind of the last chapter of Burke's story. There's a sense of desperation about and the reason it exists is because of Burke's failings.

I didn't say it meant anything, just that it will be ironic for those who wanted Burke out and didn't want a Luongo trade to be made if a deal is made.

The funny thing will be if the Leafs actually play well this year, Reimer emerges as a #1 and Leafs make the playoffs without Luongo.  Then it'll be like "oh, maybe Burke was onto something after all".  :o

OK, but why the hell did not they make their mind 2 weeks ago, not just 5 days into the season !!!!!! If they are so concerned about someone?s style, what this should tell us about their style?

The only reason I can come up with is to generate a buzz.  How many are watching stuff online about this?  If it had happened two weeks ago or during the lockout, could the same be said?  Would people have been as shocked and as involved as them doing it right before the season.  If in fact the timing could generate a bigger buzz for Rogers/Bell, and that is one of the reasons they did it when they did, I may have concerns about the direction of the Maple Leafs.

Involving Burke + Toronto will always generate huge interest.

I think Burke has been setting himself up for Bettman's job.

I wouldn't be surprised if he chases that job if Bettman decides to call it a career.

I suppose.  But here in my office, this generated interest in the non-Leaf fans as well.  Lots of "WTF?" going on.  I'm not so sure that happens if they do this in the middle of the lockout.

You didn't come across as someone who wanted Brian fired though.

I strictly meant it as, "You got what you want in Burke's dismissal, but guess what comes with it...", even if the need for a desperation deal was his doing, it might not have happened if Burke wasn't fired.

Of course, this is assuming that Burke's dismissal was caused in part by him not wanting to make the deal and that Nonis makes the deal.

I'm really starting to hate the corporate environment of the Leafs. Anselmi is clearly a puppet for the faceless ownership board of directors. The Burke firing was not a hockey move, it was a corporate move.
