Burke Fired

Zee said:
I wonder how much he'll be involved.  I supposed Burke wants to have success here, but anything going forward will probably be credited to Nonis (provided the Leafs become good through his moves).  Would be nice if the relationship could work out for the Leafs, I just can't see it.

I'm sure Dave Nonis would never let Burke not share with success this team has in the near future. I guess it will depend on how much of Burke's team disappears, which I think will be minimal. Or whether or not Nonis himself is here when it happens.

Huh. I didn't expect such positive words from him.

Class. Act.

I know Burke has another year left on his contract, but I can't see him sticking it out.  I look for him to jump into some role with the NHL given his relationship with Bettman and his recent work on the CBA.  The Leafs won't hold him back if he wants to accept a new position.

Well, I'd argue the having "blue chip" status is not a matter of rankings but rather one of ability and potential. I have to imagine the prevailing opinion of Rielly is that he is, in fact, a blue chip calibre prospect. It's hard to talk about "errors in facts" when "blue chip" is clearly a subjective matter - I'm just saying that perhaps DGB is being unnecessarily negative in his summation here (which, as you and I both know, if well worn ground when it comes to people writing about sports teams after a coach or GM has been let go).

I think you're paying entirely too much attention to the third paragraph I quoted, one which was clearly written for effect, and not enough to the second where no mention is made of "blue chips" and instead what's said is that the Leafs don't have the sort of "top-tier" talent that winning teams are built around, again, with the optimistic vision of Rielly being a possible exception to that.

No, but I think his ties and personal situation will keep him here for at least this season though. Maybe he gets a "can't refuse offer" but I think it would take a good one. I'm also not sure it will come from the NHL itself, but I believe other teams will be calling in short order.

No, I'm arguing the very specific point that Rielly is likely considered to be a blue chip prospect by the majority of hockey talent evaluators. I'm not discussing the rest of the article or its validity.

I'm keying off the bolded part:

Huh. I didn't expect such positive words from him.

As mentioned in the DGB article, he is a class act and his reaction to this reinforces that for me.

The whole rest of that quote is busta discussing DGB's notion of a blue-chip prospect, so it seems reasonable to assume that the bolded part is also in reference to the same subject as the rest of the paragraph.

So down goes brown is wrong and the Leafs, because of Burke, have a bunch of blue chip prospects because the definition of blue chip is abstract?

It was surprising to hear that Burke suggested he stay on as an adviser.  I guess the board wanted to cut ties completely.

I'm of the view that Cope wanted Burke gone and only him. The others just finally relented. I think it's entirely possible that Burke was thinking of his friend Dave Nonis, more than what transpired.

He's the CEO of Bell, right? It's my understanding that it was him that didn't like Burke and clamored for it since the sale of the Teacher's portion.

Oh didn't know his name.  I heard the rumors that it was more Bell than anyone else that wanted Burke gone.  Who knows the truth at this point.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the board of governors and Burke.

Classy individual.  Loves the city and calls the Leafs "the crown jewel" of the league.  And some idiot had the temerity to smash the back window of his car.  Whomever did that doesn't have a brain!
