Burke Fired

Corn Flake said:
this would explain the timing:

@warwalker Maybe Burke firing was supposed to happen last April; ownership delegated job to Bell/Rogers installation dept, just got around to it today.
;D

This was pretty funny.

Sources say no recent incident led to Burke's firing. New ownership did not like his "style".

If this is due to Luongo, i.e. Burke didnt' want to trade certain assets for him and ownership did, we are about to get severely BENT OVER by Vancouver.  If MLSE wants Luongo Gillis knows the price just went up.

They're saying on TSN that Nonis is expected to take over on a full-time basis, not interim, and that there is no 1 reason for it - had been discussed for awhile.

It would fit with what kind of man Burke is, always seemingly caring of others before himself. I'm sticking with a philosophical difference between Burke and the new ownership.

Me too, but the timing.... the timing is just so bizarre.  They've had since July to do this. But today?

I'm kind of with Nik, certainly when we haven't heard any reason for this yet. It gives the new guy a fresh start and if there were "issues" between Burke and management, they certainly didn't want that going into a new season.

But there's also the reality of the lockout. Firing Burke during the lockout, or right before the lockout, didn't make any sense either because he'd then be every media member's #1 phonecall. The last few days have been the new ownership's first chance to really address the club with the idea that there's going to be a season.

Which would blow a pretty significant hole into the "he was fired because he didn't/wouldn't trade for Luongo" theory.

Oh Oh....translates to why didn't you trade for Jason Blake?... :-X because
we know after all, that SN and TSN owners know how to run a fantasy league.

I still think that if that was the case, they should have done it at the end of the season, as opposed to now, but I agree with you. Doing it during the lockout would have been even more of a media show.

The way Duthie explained it was the style had much more to do with his public persona than his management style.

If this firing is based on Burkes record, what can be said to those people who wanted the Leafs to do a long and proper rebuild??

That they're right? That the guy who half-donkeyed it got fired?

So, you're saying Burke would still be GM had he gone the route of a full blown rebuild?
