Steven Jay Gould liked to say that Religion and Science applied to "Non-Overlapping Magisteria". They were answering different questions. The what and the why.

I think the middle ground is recognizing that some discussions are fact-based and some aren't. Not all of them have to be. But what you hope for and what you think should be different things.

It seems like in other sports, baseball for example, there is more mainstream acceptance of stats when evaluating players etc.

Is that something you think just need time to become more and more a part of the conversation in hockey?

The distinction of the what and the why is good, I like that.

EDIT: Thanks for your response, it's a conversation that interests me.

Baseball's always been pretty stat heavy, though - and it also provides a much simpler way to separate the individual from the team. I think that's helped the transition there in a lot of very important ways. Sports like hockey require more involved metrics and analysis before you can really come to much of a convincing conclusion on individual players, and one of the major flaws (at least, in my opinion) with most of the newer stats on that level is that there's still a significant influence on them by other players. There's been some measures to try to alleviate that (though, for the most part, those measures still rely on measurements where teammates/line mates exert a strong influence).

Pictures are easier for non-stat heads.

This is a cool view of the game from the ref cam

Kind of interesting how much you can hear the crowd at ice level at times and I'm sad they beeped out whatever Dorsett* was saying!

*think it's Dorsett mouthing off before being ejected
