Carlyle Extended/Randy's Revenge

Nonis retained, now Carlyle being retained.  Not the start to Shanahan's tenure I was hoping for.

This better mean there will be an overhaul of players.

Accountability.  Hold the players accountable...not the coach.

Team sets record for most shots allowed in an 82 game season. Head coach's system not to blame, but his underlings are. That's . . . I hate this team.

To go with the Game 7 collapse, the losing streak to fall out of playoffs this past season.  I wonder what it takes to fire him.  0-82?

Oh, there will be. Kadri, Gardiner and Reimer will be gone. Bolland will get overpaid. Team will be slower and less skilled.

Can't say I disagree with this (gathered all the tweets into one):

@DownGoesBrown

In 2+ years under Carlyle, Leafs have been an awful defensive team relying on percentages, goaltending & luck to survive. We all agree, yes?  There?s been no upward trend under Carlyle; in fact the opposite. But now he?s back. Which basically leaves three possibilities for 2014-15.

Scenario 1: Leafs fix the defensive problems, and no longer need to ride percentages. Obviously, the best outcome. Also the least likely. After all, Carlyle's been trying to fix this for two years. Spent the whole Olympic break on it. Zero progress. Unlikely to improve now.

Scenario 2: They remain a terrible defensive team, but continue to ride percentages, goaltending and good luck, as they have for two years.  In that case, they probably wind up somewhere between 2013 and 2014. So, you?re looking at a borderline playoff team. At best.

Scenario 3: They remain a terrible defensive team, but the percentages/goaltending/luck dry up. Which is probably the most likely scenario.  And if that happens, they challenge for last. Not the last playoff spot. Dead last place overall. We're talking Ballard-era ineptitude.

Can't say I disagree either. Just some pretty typical regression towards the mean will be enough to get them close. Add in a few questionable roster moves, and the Leafs are right there in the hunt for McDavid.

And it sucks that best case scenario really is probably being a bubble playoff team, in a weaker conference, likely spending to the cap once again.  I guess they're laying the blame overwhelmingly on the players.

Carlyle extended for two more years beyond next season. #leafs

To borrow a phrase from Mr Carlyle, that's just mind-boggling. I honestly don't expect him to make it through this upcoming season without being let go, unless the plan is to be mediocre at best.

I was hoping for complete changes at the coaching and GM level.  Yes, even Nonis to not be back.

Trouble is, if the above had occurred, who would have been the replacements at all positions -- namely for Carlyle's and Nonis' replacements?

So, the deck chairs get thrown off of this Titantic.
