Carlyle Extended/Randy's Revenge

Carlyle got an extension? LOL I can't believe it. Then again, this is the biggest loser organization in hockey, so I can't say I'm that surprised.

I hate this team.

Called it. I'm glad you were able to remain convinced until the very end though :)

I remain vigilant in my belief that the Leafs are somehow just trolling the fan base and Carlyle will still be gone before training camp. That's what I'm going with now.

In all honesty, though, I'll be shocked if he makes it to the end of the upcoming season. I mean, unless Shanahan's plan is to tank the team and he's really just using Nonis and Carlyle as convenient patsies.

I wouldn't be surprised if I saw Rod Serling somewhere today, smoking a cigarette and waving at me.

Has there been a formal announcement about ticket prices going up yet or is that still coming? Randy ain't "working" for free, damn it.

The talent on the Leafs is not generationally bad, but when you have a coach who's numbers in almost all areas have gone down over the last five years, isn't open to hearing new ideas on analytics, can't understand anything that has occurred in the last season, and coaches a team to generationally poor numbers... and there is a reward??

It gives me hope that one day I can fail upward too!

Burke made Ron Wilson hire new assistant's, How'd that go?

I wonder if the plan is to surround Carlyle with assistants that could be head coaches elsewhere and try and have a coaching dream team of sorts...I know I'm reaching, but maybe they give blank checks to a few big name assistants.

I would be very surprised if one of the new assistants wouldn't be a clear choice to take over in the event of a midseason firing.

That will make for some interest...who do they bring in as assistants...they have the cash to throw around to get a couple of "name" guys involved.

I just flew back into the city, and am pretty sure I saw Randy out on the wing grinning and pulling up panels.

Well, as a Leaf fan for 40+ years I'd like to say I'm surprised...  Only the Leafs would hire assistant coaches, then hire the coach, then hire the GM and then follow up with hiring a president.

Given that Shanahan, et. al are looking for a culture change and have decided to remain (mostly) status quo, I'm guessing that change will come about via player changes.  And given that most of our boat anchors are completely immovable, we may see player like Gardiner and Kadri change teams.

So everyone get ready for another year of swarming our own net and rolling 2.5 lines, and 3 minutes a night for our prospects.  The good news is McLaren has been benched by the Marlies, so he'll be fresh and ready to go next season.

Rant over (sorry)

The more I think about it, the more I think Shanahan left this decision largely in the hands of Nonis. I think this was basically Shanny telling Nonis that this is his chance to choose his coach, and that Nonis' fate is now really strongly tied to that of Carlyle . . . and I think that worries me more than simply having Carlyle back.

I'm trying to think of positives here. I think at least now if the team struggles next season it means that both Carlyle and Nonis could be gone, because like you said they are now linked more than ever. If Shanny/Nonis fired Carlyle now and brought in a new coach I think that would have given Nonis some more stability.

I have to think that Shanny understands that this could certainly blow up in his face, so I'm assuming that a significant roster shake-up is planned, for better or worse.

He'd be the laughing stock of the league if he went into next December in 25th place with more or less the same roster...so we'll see if they try to stack up for another playoff run, or if they dial back for futures.

I want to believe that there was just some confusion between "re-sign" and "resign".  Yes, that's all this was.  I'll wake up tomorrow and it will all be fixed.

This is a sad and depressing day all around

Again, it doesn't really matter the contract isn't going to stop the team from firing him if they feel like doing so. But giving him an extra 2 years instead of just 1 is pretty precious.

I get the feeling that Tim Leiweke is the kind of guy who would make sure to build his house one foot taller than any of his Neighbours' houses.

I get the feeling that Tim Leiweke is just as full of crap as the usual talking suit. So much for a commitment to excellence. Team collapses?  Nice job!  Here's two more years.

And Shanahan can also proceed straight to hell. What a joke.

The Leafs will be much improved next season. I think the new assistant (special) team coaches they bring in will really help.

Wow.

I've got a feeling that Nonis likes the team the way it is, doesn't see any problem with the possession numbers or shots against and feels like they just need another kick at the can. The core of this team is pretty much set and there's not a lot of flexibility.

So, we get to see the same mediocre coach and the same mediocre players next year finish with the same mediocre results. I hope I'm wrong, but Nonis hasn't really shown an ability to do anything but maintain the status quo.

Well, let the speculation begin:

@DarrenDreger

Muller among names being speculated as a possible fit as asst in Toronto. I believe he's a better fit with the St Louis Blues.

Can't say I know much about potential assistant coaching hires.

Unbelievable.  Loser organization rewards losing.

How is next year's draft looking?  I don't think it will be long before we're flipping the standings upside down and looking at them that way.
