Chiarelli (finally) fired

I'm so disappointed.  I wanted Chiarelli to run the trade deadline.  Why couldn't those losers win a few more games to keep him safe through the deadline?

This came out during the Koskinen signing, but the Oilers are making decisions by committee. Chiarelli was just the face (and fall) guy. I trust their deadline decision making will be just as inept as before.

I hope people here start to see now that judging a team's success by its one playoff run is a fool's errand. Edmonton and Ottawa have both recently gone deeper into the playoffs than this iteration of the Leafs and they are in the midst of tire fires largely of their own(ers') making. As seen from the front office's response to the Leafs' run during the shortened 12/13 season, windfall success is the worst teacher possible.

Obviously Dreger is getting this information straight from the Oilers somehow. So I love how trying to go "no, no. Don't be silly. We didn't let the GM we just fired sign this incredibly dumb deal by himself. We ALL wanted it!" as if that makes them look better.

edit: "early December" also indicates that they wanted to sign him to that deal 13 games into his NHL career

Yeah i think if I was still there I'd go with "this was the final straw" to at least give yourself an out.

But also now this:

Still doesn?t mean it wasn?t an organizational call (I.e. Chiarelli was the assigned point person)

So someone else from the Oilers is trying to put out the message that it was all Chia. Yeah, totally healthy and normal organization there.

This was a fun read:

"Trading a 1st and 2nd round pick to the New York Islanders on June 26, 2015 for Griffin Reinhart."

"Signing Milan Lucic on July 1, 2016 to a seven year deal at $6.0 million per."

"trading Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson in June 2016, trading Justin Schultz to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Feb. 27, 2016 for a third round pick, and trading Jordan Eberle to the New York Islanders for Ryan Strome on June 22, 2017."

If I were an Oilers fan I'd be pretty depressed right now.

It's genuinely interesting as to which list is more depressing. His "best move" was signing McDavid to a contract.

I liked how in his 10 worst moves section he actually grouped a number of things together so there ended up being 19 different transactions mentioned.

Yeah, but signing Kris Russell to a one year deal being #9 on the best list probably clinches things.

Staples has always been a big Russell supporter so I'm actually surprised he didn't put that higher.

You just can't make deals like this (which was a horrible deal at the time) and stay competitive in the NHL. It's too hard coming back from something like that.

The Leafs made deals like that for years. Once they stopped the started to right the ship.

Edit: Mark Hunter is who the Oilers should hire. He'd provide exactly what they've been  sorely missing, the ability to identify and develop young talent.

I think the jury is out, on if Mark can really do this at the NHL level... His Leafs drafts weren't that great.

While the Leafs made some bad trades over the years, when they traded 1st round draft picks, they got a good player in return. Not some guy that wasn't even doing well in the AHL.

First one that comes to mind was acquiring Vesa Toskala and Mark Bell for a Leafs 1st round pick.

They would have been better not making this trade. 3 years later, they had nothing to show for that trade.

I mean comparing Chiarelli to JFJ isn't exactly great company for him.
