Clarkson for horton

Toronto?s capologist Brandon Pridham was apparently a significant help in getting this deal done in the sense he knows the NHL?s collective bargaining agreement and the LTIR ramifications better than almost anyone. He will also now be able get the Leafs to maximize their cap space with Horton on the books the next five years, as he has an intimate understanding how Boston and Philadelphia have navigated those waters with other players who have had career-ending injuries (Marc Savard and Chris Pronger).

I know basically everyone suspected as much, but good to read all the same.

As usual, Mirtle has the goods (except the loose talk about a "get out of jail free" card -- it was anything but) and Simmons has the twaddle.

Yesterday summed up in a gif.

We're all surprised at someone taking Clarkson, but it may be that other GMs  are feeling he just needs a team that isn't terrible.

Nice gif.

Clarkson makes his Columbus debut tonight. They're playing the Devils coincidentally enough, and he'll be on their top line with Johansen and Foligno.

Hat trick?

Poor Ryan Johnasen.  He was so close to back-to-back 30 goal seasons.

Still absorbing this, a friend texted me the news when it happened and I called him a liar. We can't very well leave this thread stuck on page 17 though.

There was an interesting discussion on the radio yesterday about how, if the NHL really doesn't feel as though what the Leafs did was circumventing the cap, Horton's contract might very well be a valuable trade asset. Basically the thinking was that there are teams besides the Leafs who could eat the cap hit or have internal budgets 5+ million over the cap(Chicago, NYR, Detroit) who might have bad contracts to move and will be pressed tightly against the cap, particularly with what we're hearing about how it may not go up at all.

Obviously there'd be some trepidation about getting back a bad contract after we just got rid of Clarkson but I think the idea was that with the Leafs likely to be well under the cap in coming years taking back a deal that isn't quite like Clarkson's worst contract in the league/unmovable deal might very well be worth whatever one of those teams might be willing to give up. If the Rangers wanted to give, say, a second round pick and a prospect to the Leafs and in return the Leafs took on the last year of Dan Boyle's deal, that could work.

Columbus just not giving him a chance.  He's dropped to the 3rd line.

Really? That's amazing. Checked the boxscore about an hour ago, he was getting PP1 time too.

Interesting. So in this situation we get a pick/prospect and then could deal the player at the deadline for more assets.

To me, that type of transaction has been available since the beginning of the 1st cap era CBA. Aug 2005 Flyers trade Roenick and a 3rd to LA for "future considerations" ... which was maybe a hot dog. The Flyers paid LA a 3rd to take Roenick's contract off their hands.

Franson and Lombardi for Lebda & an AHLer was arguably another such deal (because Lombardi was badly concussed at the time and had more time on his contract the Preds, like the Blue Jackets, didn't want to get stuck with).

I think Burke did one a while back - effectively took a one way AHL contract for a 6th or something like that.

So yes, they could literally buy some assets (picks or prospects) with the cap cash they just freed up and they should be seriously looking at doing so.

I wonder if CHI would be interested in moving Bickell and Sharp and a 2016 1st/Teravainen for Horton and JVR + prospect.

Sharp/Bickell could be moved for more assets.

Saves them $5M on their cap.

I wouldn't expect this kind of deal at the deadline, but closer to the draft.
