I'm sure the Leafs' PR team already has game plans for either scenario.

Probably, but it?s not unusual for the early impressions that end being what sticks in people?s minds and colours their opinion going forward. It?s important that opinion matches their messaging.

Also, people really need to get over the frankly ridiculous idea that the hockey media is somehow antagonistic to teams, especially the Leafs. Lamoriello's press policies were insane, the media's relationship with the teams they cover is symbiotic even in cases where the two aren't ultimately employed by the same people.

Why wouldn't Leafs executives speak to media people? What actual difference does it make?

This is a totally unique question that hasn?t been posed by the media in the last 3 years. Should we trade Nylander for a defenseman?

"Bold prediction: William Nylander contract hits so late today, even Tom Wilson is impressed"

Wish I could take credit for that one lol

I think looking back on this epic screw up by the Leafs, something to keep in mind is that if a guy sits until December then the idea of "sitting out the year" becomes more like sitting out a few more months. Playing for a Swedish or Swiss or Russian team for four months before the World Championships isn't the worst fallback in the world for a guy if he's looking to ultimately negotiate a 8 year deal.

But turning your back on the NHL is not a good career move, if you actually want to play in the NHL.

I agree that this is a fail for Dubas pretty much anyway it cuts now.

I don't think this will read as turning his back on the NHL. Just not being able to come to terms with a particular team. I have very little doubt that other teams are still going to look at Nylander as a commodity who, for the right price, can help their team.

I'm not saying he won't get signed, and he may even get his money from somebody.  But some teams, maybe a lot of them, would look at him as a malcontent and never even try to get in the market, and so at the very least his universe shrinks.

Maybe, but I think that gets forgotten pretty quick if he comes back and is effective. We saw it with Radulov.

Does he get arbitration rights next year if he doesn't sign this year?
No. He's in the exact same spot next year. He has zero leverage here.

It's only a fail if he lowballed him. If he offered Pastrnak money, which is what many in the NHL world believe is the ballpark, then he hasn't. If he doesn't sign, both sides have failed and neither is "the Bad guy" here.

Depends on how it goes in the SEL or KHL or Southern Pro HL.

Let me see how I do here:

"We made several offers to (Nylander)'s agents that we thought were fair but ultimately the decision not to accept them were made by the player and we have to move on. Our focus can't be on just one player and I have to make decisions that are in the best interest in the club and eventually winning a Stanley Cup. We'll be moving forward by examining all of our options for improving the team and getting ready for what we expect to be a successful season"
