Dear William, won't you come out to play?
Dear William, greet the brand new day
The sun is up, the sky is blue
It's beautiful and so are you
Dear William, won't you come out to play?

Dear William, open up your eyes
Dear William, see the sunny skies
The wind is low, the birds will sing
That you are part of everything
Dear William, won't you open up your eyes?
I literally just read a bit on the White Album a minute before I read this [emoji3]
I was listening to it, the 50th anniversary remix, the Nylander stuff fits so well

How's the remix by the way? I thought Giles Martin did a great job with Sgt Pepper.
Well first of all I have 49 year old ears that don't hear quite as well as when I was 19, and also I was just streaming the album in my crappy Toyota Matrix factory speakers so I can't really say the mix is any better than the original lol

Berger is getting roasted on Reddit:

And they're saying on TSN that the negotiation is going to go down to the wire.

Can't believe he tweeted 2 consecutive days about Nylander and then deleted the tweets both days. Like.....why??  No wonder this guy was fired and nobody wanted to hire him again

The optimist in me thinks that if Friedman is right in that both sides have moved considerably towards the middle that Dubas is ultimately smart enough to know that there's no way 300,000 dollars or whatever is a big enough deal to not get a deal done.

I don't think it's in anyone's best interests to let it go down to the final day, though.  We may be beyond breaking fax machines but miscommunications etc. could still inadvertently scuttle things if they are right on top of the deadline.  If they are truly within $300k then IMO it's time for Dubas to bridge that gap, declare that both sides have won, and get the team we all thought we were getting onto the ice.

Realistically, I don't think there's any real harm at this point in taking it down to the wire. I'm not sure to what extent things have to actually be done officially at the Dec 1 deadline but at this point it's not like the next few days make a huge difference either.

Don't they have to have a signed contract in place by 5pm EST?

I don't know. I certainly don't know to what extent that rule would be enforced in the event of some sort of mishap with a contract agreed to. I have a hard time believing the league would make Nylander sit out the season on account of a technicality.

Oooooo maybe not the league but 30 other GMs could force the issue.  My only point, and it's a small one, is that waiting til the last minute just introduces needless headaches.

I really think that other GMs aren't nearly that petty. This is a league where everyone's employment prospects seems pretty conditional on not needlessly making enemies for no real reason.

That said, I'd be pretty surprised if whatever strategy Dubas is using here involves waiting until literally the last minute.

I think the other GMs are actually more interested in Dubas 'winning' this impasse than in acquiring Nylander because this is an inflection point in the second contracts of 2nd tier superstars that they are bound to draft at some point or another (and vice versa for players/agents).

I know Lebrun wrote about it the other day but the idea that this is just a precursor to a lot more of these sorts of negotiations seems pretty real to me. The money at stake is just too great, and teams have such poor options in terms of not signing these players, that players might have a lot of real incentive to wait it out.

Again, speculation here, but if the Leafs were at 7 years/6AAV to start with and are now at, say 6.75 then Nylander has already made almost 4 million dollars just by sitting at home.

I guess, but they run the risk of being traded to Edmonton too.

Being traded is an omnipresent risk. If they sign to more team-friendly contracts, it makes them more valuable trade pieces.

I'm just saying, there aren't many people out there who would turn down making 4 million bucks for doing nothing for 3 months.

Sure, but the same is true for the Leafs, if Nylander has come down as well.

And since Nylander has missed a third of the season, he runs the risk of losing $2m or so, so really we're talking about $2m if the Leafs don't bonus him up to cover it.
