Restaurants sort of require unmasking to do stuff like indoor eating and drinking.
Big Box Stores, or any store really (with enough aisleway) does not require unmasking to work.

I suppose I might add that with restaurants and, say, movie theatres they're places that you are going to want to have a leisurely time and stay there for as many as 3 hours whereas grocery or big box stores, usually, you're trying to get out of there as quickly as possible.

But probably the larger issue there is that places like restaurants/movie theatres are seen as less essential than grocery stores or big box stores(which can be grocery stores) and that by cutting people off from them you're not seriously harming their ability to just live their lives.

Yeah that?s fair. Like I said I?m torn. I?m hoping this just acts as an incentive to get vaccinated and we can just drop this. Personally, even though I?m fully vaccinated, I?m not going to eat indoors. I?m still not comfortable getting back on the go train to commute to work, passport or not.

I don?t know what it is, but over the last few days I?ve started losing my mind over this. The whole anti vaccine, my freedom, sentiment is just hitting me now as I?ve been largely ignoring these yahoos. But their voices keep getting louder and it?s very disheartening.

So I apologize for my ramblings here, my thoughts are all over the place.

I'm in the same space. In fairness, this is new to all of us. It's going to be uncomfortable. To co-opt LK's analogy from earlier: I've always been a "carrot" guy, but I'm quickly switching that out for a stick. I'm done with these yahoos. When 70-80% of all hospitalizations are from unvaccinated people and these hospitalizations are affecting access to health care service for everyone else, I'm done having any sympathy.

And not to get too political, but I also think we need more federal control and less power in the provinces. I believe health care should be a federal gov't portfolio with more national mobility.

Yeah that?s a good way to put it. Vaccine passport lets you access not-as-essential quality of life social endeavours. A reward for doing your part for societal good.

As the healthcare system is on the brink of collapse, Alberta has declared a state of emergency and vaccine passports a couple months after declaring the pandemic was over (just in time for Stampede).

About a month ago we were talking about taking a trip to Banff in oct, and I chickened out. I told my wife I don?t have faith that Alberta is going to be out of it by then.
I said the exact same thing to my girlfriend!

So Canada is on the UK's travel green list. The wife and I are considering a trip over. What are things like in general in the country? We were probably thinking east coast so Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal so is there much difference between provinces in regulations etc?

Thanks in advance as always  ;D

I don't think there's a drastic difference between provinces(aside from Alberta) and it's sort of hard to tell how things are in general in the country because of all of the election news. I think, you know, in Ontario and Quebec things are tense because we're all sort of expecting a 4th wave to get worse from schools being open but it's supposed to be a warm fall so you'll probably get to enjoy patios and such at least and avoid closed settings.

Thanks for that ;D

I hope you have similar experience with schools as we seem to have had here so far - yes an initial bump in infections, but that seems to peter out quite quickly and there's no real impact on hospital admissions linked to that. In fact our rates have fallen slowly again since that short spike. A warm fall will also likely be a good thing for keeping people outside a little more...

We all seem to be waiting on the edge of our seats for the 4th wave to really hit. Like Nik says above, it's probably going to be accelerated because of schools. But, I don't think we will see a huge shut down across the board because, again, like Nik says, the patios will be open, and I also think that the Vaccine Passport is in place to keep businesses open and prevent another full lock down.

Alberta is a bit of sh*tshow but they handled this whole thing a$$ backwards.

Something that?s confusing me about Alberta, their vaccination progress is pretty good. They?re at 80% fully vaccinated and 72% first dose. That?s better than Ontario. So why is it such a shitshow?

No other mitigations: masks off, barely any distancing, business as usual basically + delta. Similar to Florida, Texas, you?d get flack for masking up in public

Their government essentially proudly boasted that Covid was over in July and ended most of their restrictions, including their indoor mask mandates. For all the flack I could give Ford at least he never acted that boneheaded.

Also your vaccine numbers are flipped there. It's 79.6% (of the 12+ population) with one dose and 71.5% fully vaccinated. In Ontario it's 85% with one dose and 79% fully vaccinated. The other problem is that Calgary and Edmonton are really carrying those numbers while the rest of the province is much, much lower. Glancing at their interactive map those two cities are in the 70s and 80s for being fully vaccinated while the rest of the province is largely in the 50s. Ontario's numbers are much more even throughout all the regions.

Unless I?m looking at the wrong source, it?s says 75% 1 dose and 69% fully vaccinated for Ontario.

Also says 67.4% 1 does and 60.5% fully for Alberta. I think you'd looking at eligible numbers for Alberta but overall numbers for Ontario.
