Van Ryn was a coach under Berube in St. Louis, so me thinks he might stay.

I hope not his power play sucked
It would be mind blowing that the guy in charge of a PP that bad with the globetrotters at his disposal would keep his job.
Ultimately the head coach controls the personal on the PP. Malhotra didn't get the axe when the PP fell under his watch. Boucher is more of a defensive guy.  I kind of think if they didn't want him back they'd have let him go by now. We'll see at some point

Notes and observations from MLHS on Marc Savard's potential AC gig, among other things

Scott Arniel gets the Winnipeg HC job, while Dan Bylsma finally resurfaces in Seattle. There's only one head coach position left to be filled and that's the rather undesirable San Jose job and it's sounding like Marco Sturm or Ryan Warsofsky are getting that.

Wonder if part of the hold up on the assistants here is the Leafs are waiting to see if anyone who is left without a seat would be interested. Jay Woodcroft in particular is someone who really jumps out that I'm surprised didn't get hired anywhere this offseason. Or possibly the Leafs circle back on Todd McLellan. He ran Detroit's PP while he was an assistant there back in the day.

I'm sure that's part of it. I also suspect Berube has been having conversations with the guys currently under contract and figuring out who he's comfortable with and who he's not. It's all part of the process.

.267 win% with Woodcroft
.717 win% without Woodcroft
The night and day difference in the Oilers after his departure probably had something to do with it.

w Woodcroft:
.864 overall team Sv%
McDavid 2 goals and 10 points in 11 games

w/o Woodcroft:
.904 overall team Sv%
McDavid 30 goals and 122 points in 65 games

That's why Edmonton's season turned around. I'm pretty skeptical any coach has the power to directly impact either of those things to such a massive degree. At the end of the day Woodcroft maybe had to fall on the sword but he deserves another chance somewhere.

I enjoyed his PCs. Seemed like a decent guy.
The team denied he lost the room.
He suffered the Jack Campbell fiasco.
Pierre Lebrun felt that his firing was unfair.

A claim was that Knoblauch got them playing more to their talents than to their opposition.
Knoblauch was calmer.
Line matching improved.
Coffey was credited with getting the dmen to make faster puck retrievals.
Both coaches got them substantially improved defensively - aside from the goaltending.

Hard to look at the difference and conclude it had nothing to do with the coaching change.

Woodcroft assisted at the World Championships
Woodcroft has reportedly interviewed for a number of NHL teams but fallen short for whatever reason.
10 NHL coaches fired this season.
27 NHL teams have changed coaches at least once since Feb 2022
Average NHL coaching span is < 3 years? (short)
He'll likely get another crack fairly soon.

Yeo was the PK coach for the Canucks (who were pretty good at it in the playoffs, but less good in the regular season).

This is his work with the Flyers defense group.

Starting to sound like the "obvious" hires may not have been that obvious. Yeo is apparently headed to Ottawa instead (still close to home) while Savard might actually be trying to become a head coach again in the OHL.

Lambert was Barry Trotz's right hand man for 11 seasons and with 3 different teams. By all accounts a solid assistant/associate coach who seemed to fumble kinda hard at his first head coaching opportunity with the Islanders post-Trotz. But should be a solid pick-up in this role.

Chynoweth's contract was apparently up, so this is just him not being extended instead of being fired.

All eyes still on Boucher now.

Mildly noteworthy: Lane Lambert worked alongside John Gruden, currently head coach of the Marlies, for 4 years with the Islanders while Trotz was head coach there. So there's some connection.
