Dakota Joshua being traded to Toronto

Nice. I said last week or so that I thought he'd be a good pick-up. Was obviously hoping to send a little bit of salary Vancouver's way as well but a 2028 4th isn't anything to sweat. I don't know if Joshua will ever get back to his 23/24 offensive numbers but something between that and last season should be attainable. And that's of course in addition to his physicality.

Mr. Joshua had been pretty feast or famine with regards to his play. Could be good in a better situation in Toronto.

Edit: Oh gheez. Thought he was in the last year of his deal. 3 x $3.25m isn't the best.

So we're probably looking at something like:

Knies-Matthews-Domi
Maccelli
-Tavares-Nylander
McMann-Roy-Joshua
Pezzetta-Laughton-Lorentz

Italicized guys being able to move around the line-up. Places for Kampf and Jarnkrok still TBD.

He seems like a guy who COULD play well in a Berube system. His 23/24 season was great. His 22/23 and 24/25 seasons don't match his cap hit.

I like the pickup overall though as it's definitely a sign that the team is committed to getting guys who are heavier to play against.

Wasn’t he in St Louis with Bérubé?

A lotta lefties, but at least he’s a speedy, heavy forechecky body, not all them little ones we have. This probably closes the door on a Pacioretty return.

My goal of seeing a Tavares+smushers third line continues apace. Would also consider a Maccelli-Tavares-Joshua line to replicate an upgraded Bjugstad-Crouse situation.

I think a similar player with a right shot would really start putting the pieces in place.

For whatever reason I was convinced he was a righty and only just noticed a bit ago that he wasn't. We'll see how that all shakes out with the lines.

Knies-Matthews-Domi(ugh)
Laughton-Roy-Nylander
Maccelli-Tavares-Joshua
McMann-Lorentz/Kampf-Jarnkrok/Boyd

I guess Tre is banking now on both Maccelli and Joshua having to bounce back this year.

That's over $6m in cap space that's being gambled.

It's not that much of a gamble; they are known quantities to members of the front office/coaching staff (Doan and Berube respectively) and there are clear mitigating circumstances around their drop off in play last season. Those 2027-28 picks aren't doing anything for the Leafs during their remaining contention window.

Joshua, at the very least, will be a very effective forechecker who can chip in a little offence. He might not justify his cap hit, but he'll be an effective player and the Leafs still have space to make moves - especially if/when Kampf and/or Jarnkrok get moved.

Maccelli is a bit more of a gamble, but it's a one year thing if it doesn't work out. With better usage, more support, and better skilled linemates, he has the potential to be one of the best bounce back candidates in the league. Hopefully, that works out.
