Dave Bolland

I'm wondering how this injury affects Bollands UFA status.  Forget the Leafs,  I think he'll have a difficult time signing a long term deal anywhere given all this uncertainty.  Nobody knows how effective a player he'll be once he finally returns, would be really stupid to commit long term to him at this point.

I think you underestimate the stupidity of NHL GMs.

If he doesn't play at all again this season, it would be totally moronic for a GM to give him a long term deal.  I'd like to think they have more sense than that.

I'm reeeeeaaalllly hoping he agrees to a 1-year extension with the idea that he can use it to prove he's fully recovered.

but imagine if we were NYI we'd have kessel out for the year and would have just had to trade our 2nd best offensive player for essentially nothing.

if we were the jets kadri would have his knee blown out the day before the deadline and still couldn't make any moves to replace him.

no comparables on the leafs to the wings losing datsyuk for 3 weeks after already losing zetterberg for the remainder of the regular season.

so yeah...damn bolland (who still may be back BTW).

I'd also add the Rangers as a team that's had exceptionally bad fortune, as far as organizations go.

Cherepanov, Sauer, Blackburn, Staal, etc.

This would be the best possible outcome for the Leafs if he doesn't play anymore this season. I think, when healthy, he can be that really useful guy the Leafs are in need of in their lineup. Hopefully he returns soon and and finds his game quickly.

"Totally moronic" are words that I remember muttering over and over again on July 5th, 2013.

But to your point, while Bolland's injury and recovery could certainly be unique, there are plenty of examples of teams signing injured players to contracts. Liles signed his 4-year extension with the Leafs before returning to action from his concussion. Weiss signed a 5-year deal with the Red Wings this summer despite the fact that his season ended about a month early because of an injury. Columbus signed Horton for 7 years even though he had offseason injury on his shoulder and wouldn't be ready to play the following season until January. And both Weiss and Horton have a bit of a history with injuries.

You and your damn facts have just convinced me someone will give Bolland a long term contract.

Not to mention the Leafs traded for Kessel and signed him to a 5-year deal despite requiring shoulder surgery and missing the first month of the season.

He's a character guy and he's a winner.  He will get his long term deal at $4.5 mil per at least.

Yup.  With his experience and how good he looked on a new team before the injury somebody will be willing to go at least 5x4.5 I think.

I'd pay him if he wants to stay.

Feschuk on the radio complimenting Bolland's recovery, but noting that he's losing skating races to Colton Orr at practice.

I still don't get it. He played 15 games and had 10 points, nothing earth shattering. He doesn't win faceoffs and has never scored 20 goals or reached 50 points. He's coming off of a severe injury. Who would sign him for 5 years, let alone 4.5 per? What did he do this year on the IR that garnered him a million dollar raise each year?

If he can't return this year, he should sign a one year contract at the same amount of money with an option for the Leafs to increase it to a four year deal at the money he wants by February 1st 15.  This would give him the opportunity to prove that he still "has it".  This would be the decent, fair thing for him to do. However greedy cut throat agents will say screw this, "show me the money" now.

Options years aren't allowed on NHL contracts.

Forget who wrote it, but there was an article recently about Dave Bolland and how the specialist in the U.S. was pleased with his progress, that everything was on the right track...the language of the article did not lean itself to us seeing Bolland anytime soon, IMO. Thoughts?

What to do, if he may be ready for the playoffs he will need a least 5-10 games prior to be ready for game action especially at that level. Or if the Leafs can continue their impressive play and take the next several games then you have a squad that may not necessarily need Bolland in the first round of the playoffs.

I guess its like a poor man's Stamkos/TC situation. Would you rather have Bolland in the playoff lineup at 75%, or another guy?

If he returns this season, I see it in the CAL game on the 01 Apr 14. But I am having doubts about him playing again this season

Could be, but I would be quite surprised if he wasn't in for the playoffs.

IMO, he is going to need 5 games to get into game shape prior to the playoffs
