Nonis at the podium and PC now

23 trades today

In the wake of what they did leading up to it, I'd say it was above average in volume - compared with recent years. Not sure how the lead up and today stack up in terms of blockbusters or bigger deals (average to below average would be a quick guess).

Really missing CapGeek today.

I was thinking the same thing.  I will be in Halifax and still have Matthew's personal email address.  I thought of dropping in on him to see how he was doing.

In terms of what the Leafs were realistically going to be able to accomplish today, I'd say it was a fairly successful one. Would have liked to have seen Booth moved out as well, but, the team got more of Holzer than I think anyone expected and roughly what I thought they'd get for Jokinen. The bigger pieces will be easier to move in the summer, and, with more teams in a position to make moves on them, the offers will likely be better, too.

Surprised Leafs didn't move Polak, would have thought he'd go easily especially with all the defense trades you see for depth.

Not as good a deadline as I'd hoped for, but pretty much what I expected.  I wanted a couple top guys moved (eg: Bozak, Lupul) to help the tank, but it was always a long shot to move that salary and term during the season.

He should fetch a 1st at the deadline next year when he will be a rental.

There's no way a nearly 30-year-old rental 3rd pairing defenceman fetches a 1st round pick.  A second is a possibility, but if he could get a first the Leafs would have fired him out of a cannon to his new team to get him there more quickly.

Hi, have you met Brayden Coburn?

You know, somehow in my head I thought Coburn was pretty good offensively, but he's not.

The equivalent would be Polak traded at this deadline (because they both have an extra season left) which he obviously wasn't for some reason.

I like the guy. Maybe he has a good year next year and is valuable come deadline time.

All in all not a bad day, would have like to see Bozok moved. I am starting to intensly dislike him.

Ditto.
Bozak is not a good fit on this team, and it's possible that other Gms would have a hard time finding a place for this guy.  He is definitely not a #1C, would not be an upgrade to any contending teams current #2C position and really isn't strong enough defensively to be considered a perfect #3C...way too passive on the puck and in his d-zone battles.

When I look at any of the individual transactions the Leafs made leading up to the deadline and today, I can't say I have much criticism of them. They were generally fair value given by both sides.

Overall, I was a little disappointed we didn't get more 2015 picks. Basically, the NSH 1st replaced/upgraded the 2nd we gave up to get Bernier and we got am extra 4th from the Pens for Winnick. As 2015 is supposed to be a decent draft, I was hoping to get more 2015 picks.

I guess we still can around the draft, I suppose, if they can move some of the players they could not before the deadline ....

I don't follow these things super-closely but the people who I read who do say 2016 will probably be pretty good too.

Anyways I think you said it somewhere else but I really think that the takeaway from yesterday should be just how tough it is to move bad contracts and the Leafs have a bunch of bad contracts. Lupul, Bozak, Phaneuf...they're just not deals teams want to take on. Whenever people proposed deals for them they'd typically defend their ideas by saying some variation on "Well, maybe a team will get desperate and do XYZ".

Well, it doesn't look like that happens. Teams know how important cap flexibility is and there's a world of difference between taking on a bad deal for a playoff run and sacrificing a draft pick for a playoff run.

Bozak may not be a 1st line center. Probably a 2nd. But there is no chance Kadri is one either. Lupul Kessel Bozak and Dion will all be traded in the summer. Hopefully  we can get something in return which helps the team. BTW the team as a whole is passive on the puck in our d-zone.

Yep, this is a big mess. The last month of no moving deals they'd signed kind of proved it. Sabres and Coyotes had more guys flyin' out the door for picks and prospects - in part because the low term remaining on their contracts but as well, their contracts with their ability was not getting in the way.

Nonis had contractually committed at least more 3 years to the top 6 forwards contracts on this club and four more years to the top 2 D. And that core Nonis committed to can't make the playoffs ...

Just so ugly.

If Crosby or a comparable talent came available at the trade deadline, think some teams wouldn't be falling over trying to accommodate his contract in their cap? Sure they would. Now, it's Crosby - I get that it's not a perfect comparison because he's elite. But how badly you want a player would dictate what you'd be willing to do to free up some cap space. I didn't see a lot of teams falling over backwards trying to get their mitts on the Leafs players up for grabs. It's just more reinforcement of what we see on the ice and in the standings: they're not nearly as good as they're being paid and so they're not worth a whole heck of a lot in a cap system - and nobody wants 'em real bad.

Again, just so ugly.

There's that darn 'price performance' concept nobody likes creeping into our posts again!!  :)

The constructive news is that in order to obtain the funds to sign these crazy deals, Dave Nonis, like nearly all GMs, has had to justify to the owners (MLSE board) why they should do these contracts. Over the coming weeks those same owners will be trying to reconcile what Nonis told them to get authorization to do these contracts with these results. It's not going to go well for Dave.
