Do the Leafs need a high end Vet? And if so, who?

Yeah, I still don't think that's the sort of combo that would result in a blockbuster type acquisition but I do think that's a decent starting point(the equivalent of 2 1st's) that at the very least begins a meaningful conversation about adding a significant piece.

I don't disagree, but I think the Sedins will be a few years away from being considered "blockbuster acquisitions" by next summer. I think it's a pretty interesting suggestion though.

Oh, yeah, I didn't write that in the context of the Sedins specifically. At that point though I'd really question using Kapanen and a 1st on guys who realistically only have a year or two left.

Burns anyone?

If he's on the market you'd be crazy not to look into it but at 32 you wonder what sort of contract he's looking for. If he wants 7 years at big money that's a dicey call.

Is he good enough defensively to balance out the inevitable decline offensively over the next couple of years?

The other side of things might be that Burns has built a bit of a marketable image as Chewbacca.  How does Lou's stupid "no side burns" policy affect a guy like Burns.  Obviously a certain amount of money would trump it for anyone, but if say the Leafs are offering 7.25M and another team offers 7M, does he drop the extra 1-2 million over a contract to not deal with the Toronto media/forced image change?

Other than maybe Shattenkirk, I'm pretty down the idea of making a significant commitment to any of the potential UFAs this coming summer. Partly because, for the most part, the names on the list are not appealing for a number of reasons (age being a significant one for most of the bigger names), but, mainly because I think it's a season too early for it. I'm not convinced that by the end of this season the team will be at the point where we can really say they've legitimately turned the corner. I think they'll be close, but, in my mind, not close enough to make a serious commitment to an older, more expensive piece - and, to me, that means shying away from long-term, big money deals to anyone older than 30 (or giving up significant trade assets for similar players).

Regarding the glut of forward (mostly wing) prospects in the system, Steve Dangle takes a little more detailed look at the depth chart.

I suspect, trades are coming.

how good is jake muzzin?

with the kings needing scoring badly would it be worth looking at a jvr for muzzin kind of thing.

or is this getting into hall for larsson territory?

I just don't know that much about about muzzin but I know alot of people love him!

In my mind, they have enough offensive power on this team to win it all, especially as these rookies start to hit their peak strides. (There have been Stanley cup champions with less talent at the forward position)

What they could really use is an experienced, star D-man that could help clear out any garbage in front of their net and quarterback the PP. Someone a notch or two better than Phaneuf.  I'm really not sure who that player is yet. But if they find him, I think we could legitimately challenge for ultimate prize in a few years time.

It's difficult, because Taylor Hall could only fetch Larsson.

JVR is a 30 goal scorer in this league who stands in front of the net and has a sweetheart contract.

I think they'd get more return for him if they accepted a package that contains a potential top pairing guy and pick/s.

The Kings won't trade Muzzin and if they did JVR wouldn't be enough to get him.

Agreed.  Furthermore,  Muzzin plays the left side.  As we currently have Reilly, Gardiner, and Marincin there, I wouldn't say its the best asset management to trade JvR for him UNLESS you've made another move with one of those defensemen.
