Nonis didn't seem to rule out Nylander playing in the NHL this season.

Anyone know his contract status with Modo?

It was reported that he had terminated his contract with them for next season. Rob Longley from the Sun tweeted that Nylander said if he doesn't make the Leafs he'll probably return to Sweden. He is eligible to play in the AHL though because he wasn't drafted out of the CHL.

Yeah, I thought I read something about his contract being terminated. I thought that would have meant he preferred to stay in NA, no matter what. I would have liked the idea of him playing with the Marlies.

Yeah, that's kinda what I figured too when I heard that. Who knows though, if the Leafs think Nylander is close and might be an injury call-up maybe he'll go to the AHL.

The Leafs will have some say in that, and given his Dad was a pretty damn decent pro, I'm not too concerned.  I'd figure he'll be a Marlie.

He was also asked the question with Nylander about 3 feet from him.  Kind of hard to completely rule out that opportunity in that situation.  "Hey Nylander, work hard this offseason, you have no chance of making the team."  If his skill translates to the North American game right away, he's talented enough to make it.  You probably have to play him on the 2nd/3rd line though and my concern would be that the Leafs really don't have a good veteran guy to mentor him on his line.  Right now the Leafs would have Kadri/Holland as their 2nd and 3rd line centers.
Lupul - Kadri - Nylander would be a disaster defensively.
Nylander - Holland - Ashton wouldn't be much better defensively.

I think you would need to find a good defensive winger/center to balance him out.  Now if the Leafs made a splash and signed Stastny it might be intriguing to pair him with one of Stastny or Bozak.

Somebody mentioned this on twitter just now, Viktor Loov played on the same team as Nylander and will be playing with the Marlies next season. That might make playing with the Marlies a little more appealing.

Dave Nonis says leafs could very well make a deal to get a 2nd round pick tomorrow. He also scoffed at the JVR trade rumours. #TMLtalk

I wonder if Reimer or Franson will go to get that pick.

With the cap coming in where it did, I don't think there is room for Franson.

Sportsnet is calling this a "trade-filled" draft mwahahaha!

Man, they're going to be the worst next season (and the 11 after that).

Things can change over time but I fully expect hockey coverage to be a lot worse next year at least.

Well, that was certainly surprising. Very happy with the pick. Some scouts called Nylander the most skilled player in the draft. As hopeful as I was the Leafs would take him or Ehlers, I was really expecting them to take Ritchie. This might be a bit of Shanahan's new team philosophy sneaking through.

I like the pick, and will be interested to see what his ceiling is.

On a side note, it's awfully hard to breath under the crushing weight of this culture change.

Not choosing Ritchie is disappointing.  I sense he will develop into a very solid NHL'er and ANA made out like bandits to get him.

I'm pretty confident Nylander will develop into the better player. Anaheim got a nice player, but the Leafs got the better one.
