Draft Pick Watch - WE PICKED NYLANDER!!1!!

Are they are players in the 6-9 spot that are worth anything in this draft? I ask in seriousness because I haven't followed any of them.

Hard to say for sure.  Every draft has scouting reports that basically highlight the pro's of each player so judging by them every player is a great pick.

Jared McCann.

McCann is my preference as well.  Perlini would be a good pick in that range, too.

I don't mind McCann either, but he's been projecting more in the 12-15 range most of the year.  If the Leafs get into the top 7-8 picks I'm honestly not thrilled with the guys available at this point.  A lot of guys who are undersized or project more as wingers.

The forwards projected to go around that area are Ivan Barbashev, Nikolaj Ehlers, Kasperi Kapanen, Jared McCann, William Nylander, Brendan Perlini, Nicholas Ritchie, and Jake Virtanen.

NHL.com had 3 of their writers do mock drafts for this year, you can find them here. It'll give you some basic information on the players.

I'd love if they could somehow, someway get Draisaitl.

And here are the ISS Top 30, not split into NA/Europe: http://www.isshockey.com/iss-top-30/

By the way, since I've pumped his tires so hard, here's a McCann highlight pack (even if the Leafs have played their way out of him):

As far as NHL blogs go, hockeywriters.com kinda sucks. But I've always liked their draft coverage. They compile a lot of what's been said about prospects from people more in the known and put them in a players profile. You can check out their full list of profiles here. Here are the profiles for the guys I mentioned earlier:

Well, that sold me.

I really hope Nonis goes after a few more 1st round picks.  Move a few guys to grab some extra picks, use a few picks to move up and try to get a couple guys around the 6-15 range.

For example (not saying realistic):

Reimer for late 1st, early 2nd
Franson for late 1st, early 2nd
Above picks + to Anaheim for Ottawa's 1st (~10th overall)

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that Reimer gets you a late 2nd/early 3rd.  Franson?  Probably a 2nd given that he's right shot, but probably not an early second.  Kadri might buy you that (laterish) first and a prospect, but I don't know that many Leafs are in the coveted category for other teams right now.

Two years ago the Leafs were in a similar situation - out of the playoffs and only playing out games to settle the draft order. In the 2nd last game of the year our captain decided to show some passion as he scored the 3-2 winner in OT over the TBL. I will never forget his stupid fist pump as he celebrated the goal. I remember thinking then "way to go Dion, now that it only hurts the Leafs to win, you show up large".

I do hope for a loss simply for a better draft pick. I have a season long bet with a Sens fan that the Leafs would finish higher in the standings than the Sens - a steak dinner is on the line. A few weeks ago he was ready to take my order, but now I am hoping to lose. I would gladly buy him his steak and see the Leafs draft 3 or 4 places better than if they win.

Right or wrong, I will be watching for a loss tonight. I want the Leafs to improve as much as possible, and if that means wanting a loss then so be it.

Scoring a goal just happens.  You don't think during a game "oh I better lay off on this shot" or something.  IIRC, he received a feed on a PP and one timed it or something.  It's basically luck if that particular shot goes in or not.  It's not passion or lack thereof.  They're all competitive guys, that's why they've made it this far.

People ascribe way too much to individual plays.  Like Kessel, for instance - when he's going hot, he can take shots that go in for 5-7 games in a row, then when it goes cold those same types of shots won't go in for him.  It's unsustainable, but when they stop going in that's when you start to hear criticisms of him, despite the fact he plays pretty much the same exact game whether he's scoring or not.  It's just chance, in general.  But if it goes in he's somehow showing more leadership or something than if it doesn't go in.

I hear what you are saying and I know that you had my back with the Kessel jumping in the photo thing....but I gotta go with Michael on this one....Phaneuf is stupid and is capable of making enough bonehead plays to change the outcome of a game. (hope I am not too cynical  :( )
