Dreger : Leafs actively looking for another top forward.

Reading on Twitter that the Leafs have interest in Brenden Morrow... Don't know how reliable it is...

why would the leafs want him for he aint even that good just another average player.

One of the many average players on Team Canada for the Olympics.

The only reason Dallas is above the cap floor is because of Sean Averys buyout.  If the Rangers demote him or he goes to Europe the Stars actually have his $1.9M come off their cap, so they would be below the cap floor.

They would actually have to add salary.

Morrow makes $4.1M.  In order for something like this to work the Stars would need something like $6M back (at least)... not to mention they won't be giving Morrow away they would probably want an A level prospect and/or a player who can play now.

It likely doesn't fit.

Is that true? Aren't buy-outs something that stick with a team regardless? That strikes me as bizarre that the Isles would still have to pay Yashin's with him in Europe and the Leafs would have to pay a retired Tucker but the Rangers waiving Avery would clear his.

It would depend on how motivated they are to move him. If he's not thrilled with the idea of being one of the only competent vets on a rebuilding team I could see him being move relatively cheaply. Something built around Bozak/Gunnarsson maybe.

The Stars didnt buy Avery out, he was claimed on re-entry waivers by the Rangers.

Right.

Sorry for the confusion, but yes, his $1.9M hit comes off of Dallas' cap.

Doesn't that mean they're on the hook no matter what happens with the Rangers?

Either way Toronto doesn't have the cap space as of now to take him on, something else would have to happen too.

Fair, but that would likely put them below the cap.  And like I said, they are likely going to have to add ~$2M or so anyways once the Rangers purge Avery.

Pierre Mcguire was on the Team1200 this morning and did mention how from now until tomorrow the Stars are in a unique position of likely having to add salary.

But it is an issue worth keeping an eye on. When I first asked the Stars about the situation they had checked with the league and were under impression that Avery's cap hit would stay regardless of what happened with Avery. But later in the day there was a clarification from the league and the last word was that the cap hit would come off the books if he goes to the minors

Bozak, Gunnar + Jeff Finger then.

No, it does not. A re-entry cap hit is similar to a buy-out in that, if you're the team who place the player on re-entry, that cap hit stays with you until the contract would have expired, regardless of what happens to the player after the claim.

I'm pretty sure that's inaccurate. The league would not allow a situation where the moves of one team have an impact on the cap of another that was not involved in a transaction.

I didn't think it made much sense but when I read about the league clarification I thought,'ok, what do I know'.

So what did the league clarify exactly then?

If Avery doesn't come off the books then losing Morrow only puts them 2 mil-ish under the cap, would be pretty easy to make that up from Dallas' end though the Leafs would still have to make some moves to get under the cap but nothing insane.

If it's true (and I really don't think it is - it just doesn't feel right), they'd actually have to add ~350K to meet the cap floor.

A little more explanation...

It's only $300k, relatively little in NHL salary standards, but it's a bit of a tricky situation with the Stars. The Stars are already at the 50-contract limit, so signing a player just to get above the floor won't exactly work -- unless the team lets a player go

It certainly doesn't appear to be a big issue though.  I imagine they will make the simple solution of putting Glennie on the IR and calling someone up.
