Auston simply Awesome...

Weird stat, not exactly elite company even though Wendel is one of my favorites.  Hopefully Matthews continues to set all time Leafs records.

Some tracked stats from last nights game via Corey Sznajder/@ShutdownLine:

Unsurprisingly Nylander, Matthews, and Gardiner look great from these. Marner was a zone-entry machine. Dermott's stats from that 3rd chart are also very impressive.

That 3rd chart also shows some struggles that Zaitsev and Hainsey had with exiting the defensive zone with possession, something that's generally an issue for them. Here's one example that someone pointed out with Zaitsev:

But presumably, he'll be the first to post two consecutive 40 goal seasons to start a career?  ;)

Yeah that'll be more impressive.  I'd like to see the list of NHL players who started their careers with back to back 40 goal seasons.

Out of the top 50 goal scorers in history, I've got:
Gretzky
Lemieux
Robitaille
Ovechkin
Bossy
Nieuwendyk
Hawerchuk

I ignored first seasons with less than half a season. There were lots who had two 40-goal seasons in their 2nd and 3rd full seasons. Others:

Stastny was off by one goal (and was injured for a few games)
Bure had 60 in his 2nd and 3rd and 35 in his first, but only played 65 games, so he almost certainly would have done it.
Eric Lindros
Ziggy Palffy (sort of); he played 33 games in a season prior to his 40 goal ones

There are lots of old-timers, like Roy and Charlie Conacher, that pro-rate to two 40 goal seasons.

Impressive list, with the exception of Ovechkin, all those guys played in the crazy-goal-scoring era.  I mean it was normal for multiple players to have 50+ and 60+ goals in a season which you never see now.

That seems like a lot of work to put together.

It's not that bad.

Hockey-reference
First and second years only, era adjusted >=40 Goals

The only players that show up for both seasons:
Ovechkin - 52, 48 goals at 20, 21 yrs old
Gretzky - 43, 42 goals at 19, 20 yrs old
Bossy - 47, 58 goals at 21, 22 yrs old

All three of them are the only ones that went 3, 4, 5 in a row too.
Ovechkin and Bossy drop off after that, while Gretzky keeps going.

Kovalchuk would be part of this party as well, but missed the cut in his rookie season.

I'm liking this more and more if Auston can make that list.  Holy crap what company to be in  :o
